What About You? Lets see if i'm not one of a kind about this!

I gave away most of my childhood things or lost them moving around, but I still have my memories! I don't like clutter and rarely keep things just to keep them anymore. I feel insecure when I have a lot of stuff, I feel better when I can fit everything I care about in my car and just get in and leave.

That really makes sense. I should get my junk to that point.

I have several handmade cards that my children gave me while growing up. Some were school projects and some were "just because" cards. They are cute and I just keep them for sentimental value. I think it is pretty common to hang on to these though.

@rebelann It's amazing how much stuff you end up with. Crazy! I'm fixing to start cleaning out all the junk here.

Hi Rose, I am very opposite to my Dad, Mom and Sis, they treasure and keep all their stuff and will just keep it with them..I am different, when I don't like to use it anymore, I will give it away and don't like to keep it! My Family will always tell me to learn how to keep because I might like it again or my kids have it in the future..LOL! But, this time, I prefer giving it to my Sister and it's up to her to keep it or hand it to our cousins..LOL! I keep few things only in the past, not clothes..LOL!

This reminds me that I have so many really old clothes that I really should give to someone, some of the shirts are from the mid 1990s.

Well it's not so much I'm a pack rat Kitty, kitty....but I have a lot of things that are real sentimental value, such as documents, photos, etc going all the way back to my great-great grandparents...these are sort of like heirlooms, but alas..sniffle, sniffle, I really don't have any one to hand them down to. I don't like the idea that when I go to the great beyond that it'll all be trashed...so unless I find my soul-mate soon with family, I'm thinking of maybe making some kind of will up with a provision that all that type of stuff will be given to the Historical Society here...heck...it IS a piece of history

Hi Rosekitty, Opalkitty here! I am a packrat too! But, someone named roomate made me clean out all my stuff a few months ago and I got rid of alot of my old things and now I don't remember what I threw out and I'm really upset and angry for listening to stupid roomate! I have no idea what I still have because when we got the place painted I had to box stuff up to get it out of the painters way and the stuff is still all over the living room in the boxes. I just haven't felt like unpacking to see what's left of my past.

That's the key, the past, sometimes it's good to recycle some of the past to get a grip on the present. Don't be angry with the room mate, maybe you needed to rethink your present.

Yea, I have this toy I mean, I'm only fifteen, and I guess it's kind of okay to hold on to it, but I plan to keep it until I'm older -blushes- It's this toy of a white bunny rabbit thats holding a book that says, "Velvetine" I guess it has something to do with "The Velvetine Rabit" But yea, It means a lot to me.

hahaha!I got a new computer today. As I dug through my desk for the install discs of things I needed to reinstall I found discs from computers I owned 10 years ago and older. Now those I really need to toss out. I even found some old time floppy discs in my basement recently. Now that is old and being a packrat I think. Guess I'll start tossing some of those items away. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Love the new avatar. Wish I'd thought of it. LOL. I'm not a packrat. I usually end up giving things away that I'm not using. I think I'm generous to a fault, but if I'm not using it, I don't see any reason for holding on to it, especially if someone else can use it.

Yep, I'm a pack rat, too. The tendency was handed down to me from many generations of pack rats. We are likely related wayy back, lol. The pack rack community. lol My husband, who has endless JUNK outside and around the big drive shed, as well, of course, as in and around the house, but mostly out back, has often thrown MY STUFF out deeming it to be garbage. The last time he did it, he was cleaning out the back porch, in readiness for winter, to make room to get to the corn stove and turn it on, so he threw out 2 pairs of my boots. 1 pair of insulated rubber boots and 1 pair of summer rubbers. Granted they both leaked, but were just spares for other people that visit, so they can go out in the barn and see my animals. He gave me a new pair of rubber boots for my birthday last month to replace them, finally admitting he had done wrong. So, nope, you are not one of a kind on this one.

Hells bells Annie, sounds to me like your man is missing throwing out the REAL 'leaky rubbers' - namely himself! LOL I know you're a pack rat. I know that your guy is a junk collector. But at least your pack rat tendencies make you save stuff with a USE! His just makes your property look - well you know. LOL, I think you two need an agreement to live and let live and keep HIS hands off YOUR stuff! I mean rubber boots for a birthday present is not the most romantic gift in the world eh? And damn it, I LOVED those extra leaky rubber boots on your back porch! They came in so handy!*sob*

Well, in order to make very clear my disdain (as my words seemed to have no effect), I was so mad that I threw all of his belongings that were left in the porch after he 'cleaned' out into the driveway after I discovered he had thrown out my boots. They were right in the way where he parks his truck, so he had to pick everything up and put them back inside. I would NEVER throw out someone else's stuff without asking them first. I had not let him live it down since and that's why he gave me the rubber boots for my birthday. Nope, he isn't known as being romantic. That might give me a big head. And yes, I would have much preferred roses and a nice candlelit dinner for sure. Yes, our birthday's are only 1 wk apart. A fan, really, . Geez, thanks, plunk.

I'm BAAAAD about throwing things out - I just can't! Anything given to me by my family members simply can't be thrown - neither can books! I even have clothes I wore when I was 17, and it's a shame none of my daughters wanted that 'retro' look! I still have the children's toys - and some of their clothes which I really loved them wearing. It's pathetic! We're retiring soon, and we're just not going to be able to take everything with us - there won't be room, as we don't intend having all these bedrooms in our next place. I'm even bad about things in the pantry ... I leave muesli bars there until they've expired because I keep hoping someone will eat them - and bananas go black in the fruit bowl before I'll chuck them out! I don't think we're alone, either ...

As a fellow pack rat, I'd have to say just about everything I have should probably be thrown out But, I keep things as I may want to use them someday, or they hold memories of people.

hey mrs my mum is a hoarder she still has cuboards full of toys my sisters are 40 and 39 and i'm 27!!! seriously. So no i keep stuff initially to sell at carboot, flog on ebay or reuse/recycle in someway (i'm good at that). If i haven't got rid of it by then it gets given or donated. I tend to have a big clearout every couple of months i like it to be clean tidy and at least stored away. Looking round my backroom makes me edgy though as it's full of stuff at the moment having a carboot next month.

Hi Rosekitty, No, I have assett stripped already except for a few pieces of jewellery for each of the children, so I don't think they'll find any hidden treasures when I go. I have a few cluttered cupboards but nothing I am particulary holding on to, just stuff I haven't got round to sorting yet. he only things I have stil got are the kids teeth, first curl, christening gowns that type of thing. Huggles. Ellie :D

I am pretty good about getting rid of junk that I am not using, haven't used for a very long time, and have no need for. But, there is one pack rat thing about me. I have kept every single thing from my wedding planning. Every little scrap of paper. Each receipt. Any paperwork on potential vendors. Everything. LOL! It is all in a big plastic storage container and, I really should go through it and widdle it down to just the really special stuff. What purpose is there for paperwork from vendors I didn't chose? What purpose is there for scraps of paper with notes I made? Nothing and, they could really be a fire hazard but, they are somehow sentimental for me. LOL!

Oh geez, I am the world's worst pack rat. I MIGHT need it.......someday. In May or June, I did manage to make myself throw away just about everything that was in my linen closet. I needed the room for jewelry boxes and other business related items. I had to put two big trash cans in the hall, go into the closet, close my eyes and just pick things up and throw them in the cans without looking at the stuff. My closet in my bedroom is full of stuff that I have no idea why I still have it, and I am not talking about clothes. I just can't bear to part with things other people have given me, even the cheesy little things. I even found things in the coat closet that I bought my sisters, nieces and my daughter one year for Christmas about a hundred years ago! I am getting better though. I will let hubby go through the closets and throw things out without looking to see what it is he is getting rid of. Heck, I need the room for my beads, flowers, and all the finished products, and I know this. So somebody else has to come in and get rid of stuff for me because they all know I can't.
