i know it isn't properm but i use only six of my ten fingers. but in fairness to me, i've learned to type without looking at the keyboard and reached an average of 50wpm using these six fingers. it sucks not using all of them, but these six fingers serve my typing purposes just fine. how about you? SIDE NOTE: i am not totally back yet. i just can't resist posting a couple of discussions today. hee hee

Hey I use all of my fingers to type, and i can type without looking at the keyboard. Its actually pretty handy, because at work, if people are talking to me, i can just listen and talk with them, while i type. So no peeking! :D

I can type without looking at the keyboard too. And the funny thing about it, is that when I type looking at it, it makes it hard for me to type. It's kind of subconscious thing, when you were accustomed to it, as if your hands are moving for you, like you just think of the word, and hola! your fingers just typed it. Anyway, I haven't checked now what my WPM is. I used to be 35. I stopped typing when I gave birth. Just came back here in MyLot, and hope my writing and typing skills will come back too. I used a software called Typing Tutor before. It's so simple. you just need to take some time practicing. That is! practice, practice, practice! I haven't gone as far as numbers though. That's why, I suck at encoding numbers.^^v visit me sometime http://fedhz.com

hornetlover: we must have the same instructor because she hits our hands with a ruler too until we do it right and yes, i hated her so much too but ow i am starting to see her point in being so strict and persistent in making us learn how to type properly

I learned to type the proper way in high school way back in the 70s, so I use them all except for my left thumb. I think they still teach to use the right thumb for the spacebar, right? Or maybe lefties use their left thumb?

Were you taught that way, or do you do it because it's more natural?

Hi Kayedanda That's pretty good! I only type with one finger! That might sound weird but that is it! I type with my right middle finger. And let me tell you I am quite fast with it. Only thing is that I cannot type looking at the monitor. I have to have my eyes down to the keyboard. Happy typing

i used to type with only one finger too. and like you, i can't type without looking at the keyboard. but my work has required me to learn to type fast and type without looking at the keyboard if i want to earn more. i think it saved me more than half the time than when i used to look down at the keyboard then look at the monitor to check for spelling errors. but if it suits you fine, then i guess i't perfectly okay

Hello kayedanda, I think I am using my nine fingers. I don't usuallly used my left thumb. Maybe it has some used when typing but I am not using it. I can't type also without looking at the keyboard but not as fast as you type. I think I am just ok with my typing. I do correct a lot of error especially on the keys for my right hand. Their are lot of keys on that side and my right hand fingers are not yet used to them. Have a great day. Regards.

I have been a fast typer since 5th Grade, and my skills have keep increasing since then. My typing speed has reached 200 characters per minute and I use eight fingers of mine to type. I can type without looking at the keyboard, though writing symbols is still a problem. I rarely use my index finger, Still it is handy for me when pressing the 'Enter' key. Thumbs are used for the space key. I never thought about this topic until today, and now I have realized that I use eight fingers of mine to type. Amazing and Interesting topic. Cheers! AJ Rox.

Wow, you are a very fast typer. I use about nine of my fingers. (I don't use the left thumb so much). And I can only type an average of 45 words per minute. Good for you!

not very fast, as compared to others here who type 65-90 words per minute. but it suits me just fine, and i know that i'll get better in time. in fact, we would all do, as long as we keep practicing

I use 5 fingers & type 40 wpm. I had an English teacher who used 2 fingers & he typed 120 wpm & error free. There is NOTHING that says you have to use ALL 10 fingers when you type...it is ONLY recommended

120 wpm??? oh wow. i guess it must be dizzying to follow his fingers (even with only two of them) slide through the keyboard when he's typing. damn, he's good!

I use all 10 fingers to type. I was trained to type without looking at the keyboard and by using all 10 fingers when I was in High School. I had a computer class just for that. I can type at about an average of 70WPM. That's alright for me but I could probably do better if I practiced more.

Oh yes, I forgotten to mention that as well! I am quite used to typing blind! LOL! many people here in Hungary are fascinated by it, because not many Hungarian people even own their own computer, or have internet! Especialy in the villages..But I am used to blind typing..I just look down ocne at the keyboard to see where the letters are, and then I can just go on and on with typing, LOL!

hmm..if i type for ten hours a day non stop i think i will be able to reach 70WPM by mid next year, but i think my hand will be cursing me by then , so i guess i'll take my private typing classes in stride, and maintain good use of my hands. programmer, huh. impressive

I actually need to learn to type faster. I'm a programmer and I need to type fast to get programs done faster. I hope to reach at least 80WPM by next year.

Well I've counted this once how many words per minute I could type, because someone started a discussion about it! And I measured I could actually type quite fast! Around 80/90 words per minute, which I think is quite good ofcourse! Even if you would count with that That I'm only using 4 of my 10 fingers..I'm curious now how fast I would be able to type if I would be using more fingers! LOL! Anyway, I never learned that, and to be totally hounest, I don't really want to learn it as well! But I am curious though..could you tell me how they learn you to type with mroe fingers? Cos' you're using 6 of them, so I'm curious which fingers you are using as well! Thanks in advance!

Me neither! But I don't think I am in ened of an typing cursus, because I think I already can type fast and good precisely enough, without making any mistakes.. If they would make me do a cursus for a job, I wouldn't accept it. Because I know my own qualities, and if they can't deal with those..well then tough luck for them!

that's perfectly alright. i used to make use of only two fingers for typing, so i was way worse than you are when i started out typing. but as they say, practice makes perfect. you know what i suggest? spend a lot of time here in myLot. other myLotters have confessed to getting better at typing because of this site. maybe you can get better here, too.

well, it's not out of willingness to type fast, it's more out of the dire need to type fast, otherwise i would not get much done and will not be paid enough to feed my family

i use my two thumbs only for the space bar, nowhere else. it's where the teachers told me to use it. . now i am also wondering like you if anyone uses their thumb for anything other than hitting the space bar

I use 8 of my fingers for the letters. Then my right thumb for the space bar. We had a typing subject in High School. It also helped me with my current job. I type at least 35-45 WPM.
