im really worried about our new kitten... his tummy is stil swollen

September 30, 2008 5:13pm CST
we adopted a kitten from a lady that wanted him gone she was advertising him on a rehoming forum. she said he had been flead and wormed and was 11 weeks old when we got him home his tummy was extreemly swollen and he was a bag of bones he has been to the vets and she has given worming treatment for his correct ages which is actually 5 WEEKS OLD! not 11 like the woman said, i was furious as i treated him at home with the syrup for kittens 11 weeks and over and this could have killed him! the vet thinks its a bad case of worms and also gave him some prebiotic powder to help his tummy he has been on these for a week now but no sign of his tummy going down, altho he has put on 200g since we got him i am really worried he has another appointment at the vets in 2 weeks for a check up and injections but im so worried about him i really hope there is nothing seriously wrong with him as my children and i adore him. :(

Worms don't go away over night- and it takes time. Give it a few more days, and if it doesn't clear up, go back to the vet. He may have to give you a stronger dose of worming medication- or he may have to run some more tests. I wish your kitten the best of luck!!

If your really worried - call and make another appointment - sure it costs money, but the relief to your mind/heart might be worth it.

I hear ya. I have had sick cats/kittens. I've even lost a few babies, but always because they were too injured and/or young.

just makes sure he drinks lots of water, eats healthy food, takes his medicine, and pray he is ok.

Hi grace, The swelling is probably from the worms. It takes awhile for the swelling to be gone. He may still have the worms. Also the fact that he is so skinny will make the stomach protrude too. Just keep in touch with the vet and do what the vet tells you. Has the vet said that the kitten will be ok? Is the kitten eating? Is he drinking? Is he vomiting? You need to notice all these things. If he is eating and drinking and going to the bathroom then he is probably just still wormy. If he isn't doing these things and vomiting the I would take him back to the vet. You have to watch him carefully until he has passed the stage where he is on the mend. It depends on what the vet has already told you. When I first got my very first kitten from a shelter she was very sick kind of like you are describing and full of worms and everything else and I had never had a kitten before. She turned out to be ok. If you have any other questions you can pm me. But if you are really worried always go to the vet. I think if the vet was really concerned he would have told you what to watch out for and would have said to come back before 2 weeks.

take the cat to a animal hospital, there might be much serious problems that can be associated with a swollen tummy-- maybe he ate something hard and it hit and wounded his intestines or maybe he has edema (increase of interstitial fluid in any of organs that caused swelling) if they do the xray of your cat, they will know. hope he get well soon =)

I don't quite sure about this but I thing what makes kitten to grows healthy is to give it cats milk.. I mean it need to drink milk that came from its mother or other cat. Same with human. Usually baby that been given mothers milk will be healthier..

Wrong, milk is not good for kittens! Especially ones with worms! Mother's milk is different.
