How do you get rid of an old computer?

Over the years, I've had four or five computers. Most have simply stopped working or crashed for no reason. I didn't know how to properly get rid of the broken computers. Not sure if you're supposed to throw those things in the regular trash. So, I stuck them in the storage room. What do you do with your old computers? Is there a proper way to dispose of a computer if it's not working anymore?

we save all our old computers for parts. The computer I'm on now is 10 yrs old. I've replaced every fan at least twice now and about to have to replace another, it's had 2 CD and 2 DVD/CD players, I've put in a zip drive, replaced the floppy drive 3 times, upgraded the memory twice. It's had 3 different hard drives. And replaced a few cables as well. All parts were from computers given to us by friends and family or other computers we've had that quit working. I've learned never to throw and old computer away, they come in really handy!

I scavenged a spare CD-ROM drive from my last computer and used it on my daughter's computer after her drive stopped working. Other than that, I haven't done too much fixing up on the computer. I like the idea, though! Thanks for the tip.

You arent supposed to throw them in with the regular garbage because once in a landfill, they can leach mercury and lead in the groundwater. I know either Best Buy or Circuit City has a program to recycle them correctly. Try calling the manufacturers of the broken computers and ask if they have one, and if all else fails Im sure you could find some information on it at www.planetgreen.com. I also want to say I heard of a non-profit company who will pick the computers up and try to fix them for low income families.

I usually give it to the people who sell us the new computer. I don't buy branded computers and usually get what I want from people who will assemble it. So, I give the old computer (working condition or not) to them.

I know about computers, hardware and software, so I don't just throw them away when they are broken. I take them part by part on what still can be used and not. For those items that can still be use, I either keep them or sell them and as for parts that cannot be used anymore, I am selling them to junk shops. There are no parts to waste on a computer so don't throw away your computer yet. If you know a technician, ask him/her to help you out on sorting the parts that can be used and can't be used. A broken computer can give back the money you used to purchase it.

most garbage disposal companies have a hazardous waste day-ask them. failing that, post it on craigslist-there's people who take them away for free.

Yes, I too have had quite a few old, outdated, or crashed Computers. Since these are personal objects I wouldn't feel right about letting them out to the public. I take them carefully out to the woodshed, set them down on a block of wood and smash them again and again with the back of a heavy axe. When they are completely unrecognizable as a computer, and look like a meteorite that has crashed into the earth. I heave a Great sigh of relief and put them in the recycle bin.

I got two sitting around. I've been meaning to take them to get recycled at a specific time of year when it comes up.

I was thinking that you could probably offer them up on freecycle or give them to Goodwill. Someone might want to use the old parts to make up another system or play around with. It is worth a shot. If you don't already belong to freecycle check it out at www.freecycle.org That is a good way to recycle things and keep things that are potentially harmful like used computers out of our landfills. Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

I have never really thought about that tbh. We dont really go through a hell of a lot of computers, we tend to buy really expensive high quility ones which last and last. We have only thrown away 1 laptop, and we just smashed it up and threw it in the bin ...its screen fell off it was that old! lol I am now on a very good vista computer, which cost a bomb, so i dont think i will be replacing it very soon! lol Chris

Offer it for sale at a really good price. I have a friend who fixes computers and they can all be fixed if you know how. I had one that had a damaged connection for the keyboard and I sold it for $ 700. You can sell them in Trinidad if you want.

I dont throw away old computers since there are important information there that other people might get if you just throw it away on regular trash. Make sure you destroy all information first before you throw it away.

We post our old ones on freecycle and craigslist. There are a bunch of groups in our area that take them and refurbish them for needy families. We had one that caught on fire that we were able to recycle for a few pennies. I would encourage you not to just throw them in the regular garbage and to seek out a group that can use them or a recycling center that will take them.

i have a computer now ,but it is my first computer ,so i have no experience to treat an old or broken computer , but in my view ,i feel you ought to sell them ,if there are computers which can be used also ,you can sell these computers to second-hand market .if all your computers are broken and you can not sell them by a whole computer, you can sell parts as well .

You can take them to a junk yard and sell it as junk to them. Youcoudl take it to a computer repair shop and give it to hm sothat he canuse the servicable parts in repairs.

Check in your area for people or companies that take in old computers to refurbish and give to people who don't have or can't afford computers. Your city's DPW or dept that handles trash pickup may have information on this.

It is not advisable to throw away old computers due to environmental issues. In my country we could find buyers for old or defective computers. I think they can be recycled.
