Getting a degree without defending thesis?

The graduate manual in the school I'm in clearly stated that there should be an oral defense before a degree can be obtained by a student yet I heard someone is graduating without defending her thesis. I think this shouldn't be tolerated by the school. It's a shame for a university claiming to be one of the best to do such irregularity. What do you think?

this should not be tolerated. I, too, would raise hell when this happened. fair is fair and schools should follow what it is teaching. this is sending the wrong signal to other students. No wonder, there are many rude people nowadays!

Hello yellowpaisley...thanks for the response. You are right. It might be the reason why there are many rude people now. If a person has tried getting something that s/he didn't really work for...s/he will look for an easy way everytime s/he has to do something and will think that s/he is great.
