Yep I'm going down the other side of the hill. I turned 48 yesterday. I've always liked to wear the latest fashions. Well, the latest casual fashions. I was never big on dressing up, formal wear, and that sort of thing. I'm more a jeans and cool blouse person. I wear long skirts and flats to church on Sunday. My kids say I'm still just a hippie. LOL Anyway, I like buying the latest in casual clothes. I'm small and thin so lots of stuff fits me well. I shop in the junior department and I like my clothes. If something looks like it's definitely made for a teenager, I don't buy it. Some women think I dress too young, that since I'm "older" I should dress that way. Ok friends what do you think, should I tone down my style and be more conservatively dressed or should I stay my "hippie" self?

I think you'll be fine, 48 isn't completely old. I mean, some people should definately not wear some things. A large woman with excessive cellulite should probably not go for a tramp stamp, short shorts, and a halter top, with her thong hanging out. But if you got it, flaunt it!

I don't know about having it goin' on but I fooled a cop pretty good not too long ago! He thought he was pulling over a teenager cause he saw me from the back with wild hair and a wild shirt... when he walked up to the car, that was full of kids from my youth group, his chin dropped! He was He couldn't even tell me why he pulled me over. Gave me a ticket for my son not wearing a seat belt, which he was. I beat the ticket too!!!

I think that fashion style should change with age to an extent. I don't agree with 40 year old women wearing the clothes they went clubbing in when they were 18. It is just degrading to themselves. I do on the other hand believe that being comfortable is number one priority. You can look good all day long but it the blouse is messing with your breathing or you need to use crisco to get into your jeans then the is probably no comfort. I for one and comfortable in jeans and a t-shirt but I do still like to look decent. If I go out to the Olive Garden I throw on a nice blouse but has plenty of room for me to breath.

You know I didn;t wear anything when I went clubbing that I wouldn't wear now, except maybe the shorter dresses. I'm the exact same size and I never wore revealing clothes anyway!

I think most of the time it's fine to stay your hippie self! I see no problem with jeans and a blouse or long skirts and flats, for any age. It's when a person looks like she is trying very, very hard to seem 30 yrs younger that it is not a good thing. Or when the person wears very short skirts, very bare halter tops, bikinis, in their 50's -- I think that rarely seems ok or appropriate. I think in most cases, tho, our hairstyle and make up should change a little, to flatter the changes in our skin and faces as we age.

Stay yourself and wear what you like. However, there are limits I feel. Last summer I was at the pool and there laying out in the sun was an old woman that had to be in her 80s. But, lucky her, she still had her thin figure. However she was COVERED with wrinkles and had a head full of gray hair. Guess what she was wearing? A tiny bikini. I was shocked. It just didn't seem appropriate. I too like to wear casual clothes (I'm 49). But, I won't be wearing those tiny little shirts that the young girls wear to showe their belly rings. I will however be the one in the fun jewelry and disney tshirts. LOL

In my opinion I think fashion is also a part of our personality. It is actually an expression, a statement of our personality or on what we think. So as we age I think we also change our fashion sense, if not absolutely, in some ways. Just like a life cycle, we fell in love with one fashion statement, later we stop loving it then we change to another fashion, then a few years more, we go back to the old fashion that we once loved. Then as we grow old we stop paying attention to fasihon.

I didn't stop paying attention to fashion at all. I do agree with you that it is a statement of our personality and that also changes with stages of our lives. I will never wear a polyester slacks suit or elastic wasted pink slacks... Nope I can't go there.

if you think that keeping in style gives you a good feeling then dont stop...my husband will always remind me that style of dressing should not affect on how old i am since its good to be young looking again on the way i dressed up too... as long as its not so loud and so sexy that it show some undesirable things on the body....

Size yes but style no. I think it is fine for girls to wear pink and glittery things still if they want to as long as it is figure flattering, not showing rolls and dangling skin. as long as you like it and it makes you feel good to wear it, then it shouldn't matter what age you are.

I was never into hippie but I am into the casual and attractive. Yes, your taste should change to suit age and appearence. You can't try to be fashionable with something you're not. So leather shoes and designer shirts and an upbeat hairstyle and, yes, I'm 57, so you're not quite as down the hill as I am.

Heck I'm 50 and I wear younger stuff when I can get away with it, wish I were small and thin and could get away with more though. This is kind of along the same line as what my father-in-law said. After I had my first child, he asked me when I was going to get a more mature hair style (mine is long and straight). Well I don't think I'm ever going to cut it now! Do what you like and what you feel comfortable with. Don't let anybody else dictate what your style should be!

I know what you're saying. I feel bad you have a grump for a father in law. There are some ladies that just look at me like I'm crazy while others say how nice I look. Whatever, I have to be me... wasn't that Sinatra LOL

i say dress how you feel.. if you dont feel like dressing with granny dresses and pearls and nylons then dont!! i think no matter what even if you dress young it will slowly evolve and get older with you.. so that your not totally ridiculous lol

There are a lot of things to consider when buying clothes, and, like it or not, one of them is age. First, I think you have to specify what you mean by "dressing too young". What are the cuts of the clothes you wear? Are they too tight or are they too short? How about the colors? Are they too bright or do you stay on the more neutral tones? I am all for dressing up especially if you think you have the body for it. However, we shouldn't go overboard and dress like we are in our early 20's when we are actually in the late 40s. You can dress younger than your age if you actually look younger than your age. Dressing up 10 to 15 years younger than you are is ok I think, as long as you also look 10 to 15 years younger. Also, go easy on the colors. It's usually the colors that make the age difference in clothing.

Well I don't do short or low cut but I do love those new skinny jeans! And I think I wear them well. As for colors, I'm a red head and have always had to be careful with colors! Thanks for your reply.

I think you should dress in whatever makes you comfortable. I would have said I would stay away from dressing like a teenager which I would have meant those low rise pants, short shirts, etc. but I read that you don't even wear that kind of stuff anyway. So I think you should stick to your "hippie" self! I think at any age, you should dress to be comfortable and wear clothes that make you feel good about yourself. You shouldn't have to tone down your style especially if your talking about jeans and cool blouses. I say be a "hippie"!...LOL

redkathy hi be yourself and you will look great as dressing against what you are really will look wrong on you. age is not a factor really just be your great self and you will look great and feel great. Now i am a guiet person, a bit of stay at home so I dress to suit my age and my white hair and blue green eyes.

The only thing I don't want to see is some old, saggy person wearing something overly revealing. Other than that, I think you should be allowed to wear whatever you like, so long as your not offending someone or making people overt their eyes as you walk by, lol.

Does it look good? Feel good? What is dressing older? Wear what you are comfortable wearing so long as you are dressing appropriately for the situation. Don't worry what others think. The only thing I would say is if your children go "ewww mom, are you wearing that'. You might want to ask them what the problem is.

Hi redkathy! I hope you enjoyed your birthday too! I finally got to celebrate yesterday too! My boyfriend took me out to our favorite Chinese buffet restaurant last night and we had a great time. He bought me flowers and a card and 2 nice warm fleece shirts on Friday night for my birthday. Now, since you are still young and petite you can wear whatever you think is appropriate! Sounds like you know what to wear and don't listen to those old farts! What do they know! I'm 56 and I still love my jeans and boots, but I don't dress too young and not inappropriate, but I wear sylish clothes. I don't cater to what's in style, I never really did. I love the "hippie" look so go for it! Nothing wrong with that in my book.

My Dad always says history repeats itself. All my clothes have been in trendy style at least three or four times in the last five years... The styles keep coming back! I take really good care of my clothes so I'm always ready LOL My niece says I'm the queen of picky, and my son says I'm a hippie. How does that work?? I'm glad you had a nice birthday!

i don't think so.. you can still wear hippie clothes as long as it looks good on you.. i have a 40 year old aunt and she still wears trendy clothes.. she carries her clothes well... i admire her for being cool inspite of her age.. she also listens to usher raymond's songs and other rnb artists.. cool!

Change is a good thing but not always what makes us comfortable. I have had my hair short and permed for over 30 years. Several months ago my children convinced me to allow my hair to grow long and forgo the perms. I still am not comfortable with it but they all like the new look. Maybe you could just incorporate a few different items into your wardrobe just to mix things up a bit. If your comfortable wearing hippie type clothing then you should continue to do so. Just maybe every now and again throw something different into the mix. It keeps things interesting.
