I prefer to put white onion when I cook stew and with some other dish that I cook! And normally put red onion in salads! But if I ran out of white onions I also used red onion when I cook and I don't think that there are much difference! I use shallots if I cook noodles soup of fried noodles! Which do you prefer red or white onions in your cooking? Thanks for sharing.

I use what ever is cheap when I am cooking the onions but when it comes to what is fresh I prefer red onions. They have the best fresh flavor expecialy on top of salads or mixed up on tuna fish sandwhich. Mmm.

You misunderstood a point. I have no allergy to onions. It is just that onions commonly makes people weep and that it seems to help some of us with respiratory allergies. Back in the 80s, the last time I took immunology classes, there was interest in crying as an immunologically beneficial thing for a person to do. I do not know if any systematic studies have ever been done.

I usually buy and use white onions. I really love the taste of onions, and use them whenever I can. I have used red onions, but mostly in salads, a green salad or a pasta salad. I have used shallots before too, I like the flavor of shallots, but they are something I do not buy often.

CJ, I think the red color occurs due to iron. (Does anyone KNOW?) I have friends that want to eat the range of colors in their veggies every day. I like using red onions in salads because they just add color. Personally I cannot tell any difference in taste cooked or raw. When I had undiagnosed food allergies, raw onions contributed to acid reflux. By not eating soy, corn, or peanuts, and other things I'm allergic to, onions just taste good. (I used to joke that I secretly ate onions and friends would then say, "That's no secret!") Steve P.S. I also have the idea that weeping caused by cutting a plate of onions is good for my immune system. (I swear I relieve hay fever symptoms by chopping onions!) P.P.S. Just for convenience, I try to stay ahead on chopping onions, keep a pint jar diced in the fridge to sprinkle on salads and into stir-fry dinners.

When cooking I use yellow onions most of the time. On occassion I will use white onions. Yellow onions are sweeter but I like both of them. I love red onions but usually eat those uncooked like on sub sandwhiches, hamburgers and in salads they are very good. I put onions in most of my cooking. I know for some people who like them but can't eat them as they bother their stomach. I am so glad I do not have that problem. They give food such good flavor and I prefer to use fresh instead of onion powder.

I usually use red onion than the white one, I only use white onion in steak. Red onions were quite tasty and spicy, I often like to use it in the dishes I cook. Yeah, I agree, there's nothing much difference between the two, I'm also like that sometimes, when I ran out of red onions, I'll use white one.

In our house we always use red onions. Red onions last longer than white ones that's why that's the one we buy always. Red onions have more flavor but they are spicier that's why you shouldn't use much of it in salads. I agree that it should be used more in stews so that it would be more flavorful.

I much prefer brown onions as they have a nice strong bite for cooking, they are brown skins and white inside. Red onions are great for salads as they are mild enough to eat raw and stronger than spring onions. Sliced up in a nice tossed salad they have a lovely mild bite which makes the salad very tasty.

When cooking I prefer white or yellow onions. If eating raw with vegatables I prefer red. If making onion rings I prefer Vidalia as they are sweeter and tend to be bigger. I also use red in pasta salad as the color makes it look more appetizing.
