Free electricity for all!

October 14, 2008 3:56pm CST
Does that sound like a good thing to you? Free electricity for all families worldwide. I think its possible. I have watched a load and read a load of websites and documentaries on renewable power. Unlike traditional generation methods like burning coal etc... renewable generators like wind and water turbines and solar panels dont need for you to buy fuels to burn and so once the wind farm / solar plant is built the only cost would be up-keep and repairs. Why don't we come together as communities and get these wind farms built? We could pay for them out of personal loans etc and then have free electricity! anyone have any thoughts?

I believe this is an excellent thing to think about, research, and get politically motivated behind. Unfortunately, I fear it is probably complex to put into action. However, not all things which are hard cease to be worth doing.

Nothing is free. That's a fact in our society. The wind turbines are extremely expensive to begin with and they take maintenance. I do believe we could eventually lower the cost of electricity if we used something other than fossil fuels to generate it, but even that would be a long time coming because the cost of the turbines would have to be paid first. In a small community, and I mean very small, it might be possible for group to personally pay for and set up turbines as a collective program, but it wouldn't be free.

this is a fantastic idea... i had read in a newspaper here as well before that there is a family who use water and sun power to generate electricity... so they never have to pay for electricity throughout their life... i wish i can do that as well... that will save me heaps of money as the electricity bill here is also quite expensive... take care and have a nice day...

It would be nice if we could get electricity for free. But it's not going to happen unless we do it for our selves. A wind farm with 17 turbines costs $14.5 million. The winds of at least 13 to 14 mph to get 23,000,000 kilowatt-hours annually—enough electricity for roughly 3,300 homes (assumes 98% availability and 23% capacity factor). Besides the cost the noise is terrible as one farmer claimed. Then there is the maintenance cost. So it can't be free.

Thanks for replys everyone! Glad to have sparked a little interest. So 3,300 homes have to pay around $14 million right? so thats about $4300 each home has to pay. Obviously the lines will need upkeep, so lets call that $50,000 a year (possibly just a guess)..... im not really sure how much it would be but you know. So lets say each of the 3,300 homes pays about $1100 a year for 4 years and that's the wind farm paid for.... so now lets drop the payment for electricity to say $100 a year....which is damned cheap (if not free) thats $330,000 to help pay maintenance. sound a little more possible when u do the maths?

That would be a good idea if you could get enough people involved in it. The methods you mention would work great. There is also another method that could be used anywhere the sun will shine. It is called solar concentration. If you remember the old satellite dishes that were about 8' wide you can use one of them. You line the inside of it will mirrors about 6" square. The idea is to reflect the sun light off each mirror where all the bean]ms from the mirrors will strike at one place above the center of the dish. You will have a spot about twice the size of a soft ball that is thousands of degrees F. It is a perfect source of heat to produce steam. It would be perfect to run a small steam engine pulling a generator to supply electricity to a home. You could probably build it for less than $1,000. You could build them larger to supply several houses.

Back in the 1990 people were putting solar power on their roofs, and south side of their house. People were spending $10,000 or more for these panels. Now 10 to 20 years later you don't see very many, WHY?? They are very expensive and don't last that long and are extremely expensive to recycle or get rid of. Did they work, yes when the sun was shinning. Wind Turbines are very expensive and only work effectively with in certain wind speeds. Nuclear energy is also free once the start up expenses are covered. The fuel rids will continue to produce steam for several hundred years. The only way that solar, wind or bio energy can compete with Oil and Gas is with l=very large government subsidies. There is probably a large cheep source of energy out there and we will find it if we let the free market work.

You're right. Why don't we? The power companies don't want us not buying power from them. What I wonder is why new buildings and new homes aren't all equipped with solar panels. That technolgy has been availble for years. Recently, after hurricane Ike came through Cincinnati and left us without power for 100 hours, I did a bit of research. There is a catalog company that sells individual solar panels for about $300 each. I think 10 of them would power the entire house. But one or two could power a big portion of the house and reduce our electric bill. We're really considering doing that. And...since the news and weather folks have told us that we should expect more power outages this fall and winter...since the storm weakened trees that didn't come down yet, having this would be helpful in that regard as well.

Solar panels produce DC elictricty and you need AC to run home appliances so you also need to consider a converter. You will need a battery back up which is extra for evening and cloudy days. What is the life span and how much does it cost to dispose of them when they wear out?

Yes good Idea i think but how can we provide electricity in African counties there are lot of poor families there and they don't have house and they don't have money to eat food. How can we provide then electricity. here Electricity is not important But Food is very important to them.

perhaps in africa where it is hot and sunny? is it? then they could produce and sell electricity? ok so its not free but it would improve the poors lives? perhaps a charity should build a windfarm or solar farm and allow all profits from it to support a local comunity.

Hi friend,It sounds great but its impossible in our country that too our state tamilnadu in INDIA.Because we have terrible shortage of power nowadays. The government is not taking any action towards powercuts. We have nearly 8 hours powercuts everyday. From 4am to 6am,2pm to 6pm and 8pm to 9pm.We cant do anything in this time .We should prepare everything when we have power. We are stuggling a lot without power.Daily living itself has become a struggle.Children find difficult to study ,it affects the industries etc,There is no end if I start talking about powercuts.Free electricity is only a dream for us.thanks for sharing.happy mylotting.

I feel for you guys, i dont think i could handle living without electricity. There must be a way of improving the indian persons station in life. We are living in an age of technology in the west and only because of profit are others left behind. happy mylotting.

I believe it's a great idea, but I don't know how it could be possible. I would say lower electricity rates so that everyone could afford it, and also add renewable sources and sources that don't involve coal burning. But it would take 30 years for a windmill to pay for itself ~ they are very expensive and if they decide to add windmills then our electricity bills get raised. So it all has to work out somehow!

i had the idea for this post after watching a film called Zeitgeist 2 Addendum which can be seen at www.zeitgeistmovie.com watch the movie .... it is really cool.... we must work for the future how we want it.

I think it is a good thing if electricity would be free but I think it can not be achieved in the real world. Somebody has to maintain these and to maintain these we all need money and we all know that money is not free. And we all need capital. I like more the idea of using water that gasoline. But i do not understand why it is not prospering. I hope our solar transportation would be improved in the years to come.
20 Oct 08
ok then, well then how about we dont have free electricity but we have non-profit electricity companies, like electricity charities that only charge exactly what they need. instead of making HUGE profits like our current energy companies do?

This idea really sound !!! But i think Most essential consumable resources like electricity , petrol & Diesel , can never be free of cost . They are always payable. worlds are now quite busy in discover of renewable energy . So i am imagine the day when I hear a news about free electricity.

I think it may come to the point in the UK where each household will end up making their own arrangements regarding electricity production, due to the extremely hugh bills in this country. I have looked in to solar panels and will certainly go down this route in the next couple of years. I have also exchanged my electric fire for a muti-fuel stove and burn newpaper bricks and horse manure bricks on it... cheap but not very environmentally fiendly, though.
20 Oct 08
damned straight, our bills are mad.... didnt british gas go up 20% so far this year..... madness.. so your up for a free energy project then? I agree with cutting down our use of energy and conserving but i also dont think we should have to. The sun, sea and wind are awesomely powerful and if we can only harness their energy we can live as we like.

In India I know many of us wont even mind paid electricy if offered to. Here there are many areas who have no roads to reach them and no electricity as yet. Whatever plans are made to uplift the conditions are hijacked by redtape of officials. People are still uneducated and ignorant of their rights we still have a long way to go here.

I think it would be great if our electricity is for free and we would use means to acquire with destroying the planet. But countries economies depends on it. Here in the Philippines we have an alternate to crude oil. LPG or Liquified petroluem gas. I think the supply would be enough to lessen the importation of oil from other countries. But I think the Politicians are afraid to lose ties with other countries if this happens. Oil exporting countries' revenues would be highly affected

hi ,i agree with your half comments.yes , i argree with you that maybe we can use the electricity is free . because now the technology is fast developing . The other side ,i think we should get used to a good consciousness to save the power and not to waster the resource . if this ,i think free to ues electricity is a good idea. or ,we must pay the moeny for the electricity .because we can use paying money ,in order to save wasting electricity .

hahaha..too good to be true.if it happens,it's a great world.because electricity is damned expensive nowdays.the bill high, tax high, yet the usage is also high.check for yourself, even your computer consume a lot of energy, not to miss air-condition,television.but i agree with the idea, free electricity to all families in the world.hahaha.it's not wrong to dream and hope.happy mylotting
