What type of food do you feed you pet dry or canned? My daughter has a dog and she feed her dog dry dog food she said that canned food makes their bowels smell real bad. Is this true? What do you think is best for your pet dry or canned food?

I've heard over and over again that dry food is best for dogs while canned food is best for cats. I'm not sure of the exact reason for this, but it definitely has something to do with their digestion and overall health. One thing I do know is that cats don't have 'chewing' teeth like we do. Moist cat food is much easier for them to eat and digest. I believe the moist food also has less 'fillers' in it, less ash that can cause urinary tract infections and crystals in their bladders. As for dogs, I just don't know the real reason for it. I never looked it up. I DO know that I have had the same problem as your daughter whenever I would give my dogs canned food.

I mainly feed dry dog food and treats. From time to time I will buy my dogs canned dog food. But it has to be beneful. As the other stuff have a nasty smell to it. I think the best for your dog is dog food that doesn't have corn or corn fillers in it. As corn just passes through dogs and they get no nutritional value from it at all.

My dogs have always gotten dry food. My brother used to give his dog canned food, but quickly realized that the canned food gave him really bad smelling gas and the runs.

I have cats. I give them dry food, because it is more economical. It is supposed to keep their teeth cleaner as well. I have known others who feed wet food, and they litter tray does seem to smell worse. The richer the food the worse the odor.

I used to feed my dog on dry food, adding canned food a table spoon every now and than. I did not know that about canned food but I preferred to give them fresh meat instead of the canned one. © ronaldinu 2008

First of all, it is a myth that dry food is better for a cats' teeth. Cats don't chew; the dry food turns to paste and stays on their teeth and is usually worse for them. If you feed a good quality canned food to your pets, you shouldn't have any problems. My four cats eat canned food 2X a day. They are able to maintain their weight because the food they get has no grain fillers. Cats are obligate carnivores who do not need grain in their food; they don't eat it in the wild and cannot digest it properly. The food my cats get is all human quality. A lot of vets do not know a great deal about nutrition. Most of their knowledge is from the food distributors who just want to sell their products.

Our only pet is a cat. We chose to feed him only dry cat food for economy and convenience. As long as we've had him, he's never had anything else. I think that it is true that canned food makes a cat's stools smell bad. Our cat's litter only smells of the ammonia in his urine. His stool has little odor, but that of our neighbor;'s cat, who gets both dry and canned food, is hold your nose bad. Our vet said that a cat does not need different foods. One is sufficient. Our cat never begs at the table. He won't even eat our food. If something is dropped, he just smells it and walks away.

I have heard the came thing about canned being bad for their insides. Its ok to put a bit a couple of spoons of canned on the dry as an appetizer. :)

I tend to feed my cat a mixture of the two, he has wet food with a little dry on top. i was told when i got him that the canned wet food could damage his teeth if that was all that he had, and that the crunchiness of the dried food would help to keep his teeth cleaner and free from plaque, so i have followed this advice, and he seems happy!! xxx

Hi Chevee. I always give my dog dry food. It's cheaper for me. I don't know which is the best to feed them. Some times I add something to her food but most of the time she just eats it dry.
