Cat Abuse?

A couple of my friends are thinking that my cat may have been abused prior to me adopting her. Do you know what signs she would show if she had. She does come to me and she'll jump in my lap but as soon as I put my hand to pet her, the tail starts going wild and she turns her body grabs my arm and bites me hard. It's happenig so constantly I'm nervous when she's in the bed with me in my face. I'll go to rub her head and she bites me. Do you think maybe she had been hit or rough handled?

one of the biggest signs is usually being distrustful of people, standoffish. is she fixed?if not that could be why she's aggressive.

The paperwork that I got from the shelter says that she has been fixed.

hmm..the only thing i can recommend is trying to increase playtime to get that energy out.when we adopted our uncle's cat,he was very tackle/bitey,but i noticed some laser tag with him made him calmer.

she may have been abused in the past and that may be the reason why she is actuing like that. the best thing to do is not give up on her. try feeding her treats from your hand and be really slow when handling her. if she has been badly treated or abused then she doesn't have trust in human contact and thats why shes doing that. just work with her and try to show her that you are safe and your not going to hurt her your her caregiver and she should start to calm down and eventually you should be able to touch her without her going crazy. i had a cat like this it just takes time and dedication.

It sound that it may have been abused. How long have you had the cat? I would suggest to let it be for a while. It will get used to you being around and become more comfortable with you. Then slowly work into petting it.

yeah it sound like she's been abused. what you can do is to try to touch her once in a while even when she's not on your lap. you might as well wear something to wrap on yur arms if in case she bites you. maybe she had been rough handled that's why she dont like anyone touching her

where did you adopt her from. Unfortunately many of the animals that come from the shelters went through some kind of horrible thing before they got there. I don't know about the biting when you pet her deal is about. As far as I know an animal that was abused like that will not even come to a person because they will be so afraid of people. I'm sure they have to go through some sort of "animal therapy" before they are put up for adoption.
