Are Clip On Earrings a Thing of the Past?

I've noticed that a lot of people of my grandmother's age don't have pierced ears, but instead they were clip on earrings. My grandma loves clip on earrings and I just bought her some for Christmas today. I was thinking though, these are getting harder and harder to find, and I wonder if people just don't wear those anymore. I know she said before they also had screw on earrings and now you never see those. Now it seems like they are moving to mostly magnetic and perhaps more people are just piercing their ears too. I remember when I used to wear clip on earrings and a lot of them really hurt. So did the magnets. But then I got my ears pierced and the pain was even worse. Not the pain of the piercing itself, but the pain of the allergy to metals (even 18K gold). Eventually I found out that pyrex glass and my ears do great together and now I'm finally glad to have pierced ears instead of the hassle of clip ons.

I used to wear clip on earrings and they hurt my ears, and I found that you could not have the dangling earrings that come with pierced ears. I also found out that I was allergic to nickel and did not wear earrings and it did not help having an old woman in the neighborhood with a needle and an ice cube. I was so afraid of it hurting, that it was not until I was in my fifties that I got my ears pierced. And i found it did not hurt, but I have to have either gold or silver or surgical steel because my ears are sensitive, but it is so much better than the clip ons I had as a teenager.

I actually used to have some dangly clip on earrings. But they weren't as cool looking because you could tell they were clip ons. I can't wear silver or gold due to allergies, so you're doing better than I am. Some people on the one side of my family can wear silver and gold like you, but no cheap earrings. Others keep having their piercings grow back. I probably would have been one of those, but I was stubborn for 3 years and finally found out that if I got glass earrings, my ears were happy.

I almost got my ears pierced earlier, but they came out with magnetic earrings when I was a teenager. So I ended up getting my ears pierced when I was 20.

I have found that clip earrings have not been comfortable so since my ears are peirced, I just wear very small tiny earrings. I know my mom loves them and many people still prefer them. Theres no doubt that you do see less of them available, some of the high end stores do still carry them.

Yeah, I remember most pairs being pretty painful. One pair I had that wasn't painful ended up falling off and breaking. But the pain of clip ons was nothing compared to the pain of having allergic ear lobes, that was bad. I'm glad now my ears are finally pain free. I never knew clip on earrings were a high end thing though. Hmm, I'll have to check out some better stores when I need to buy my grandma another pair.

I remember that too when I was younger wearing my sisters clip ons. I would get ready to wear them to school and before I could get out my ears were hot as ever from the pain. I see them alot at yard sales and the thrift stores but thats it. I didnt know you could still buy them in the stores though, can you? I've seen the screw on's which I thought were unique but never bought any because it looked too mechanical.

Occasionally they still have the clip on earrings in department stores. I've never seen screw-ons new, just the ones my grandma has. My mom actually gave me one of those as a kid, but the other one was lost already. They are more comfortable because you don't have to screw them on so tight. But then, they can fall off and that's how the other one was lost.

I wonder how many older people go and get their ears pierced now. And I wonder how long it takes them to heal. Even just doing some stretching I've found that I kind of wish I started this as a teenager when my skin was quite stretchy, instead of now when it is not. But then again, I'm glad I didn't stretch my ears as a teenager or I probably would have done something crazy and would have huge ear lobes, lol.

When i was little i used to play with my grandmothers jewlry and she owned several kinds of clip on earrings. I think one of the reasons that they are a thing of the past is because it is so cheap to get your ears pierced. Someday clip on earrings might come back in style and we can all experience the pain of the earrings pinching the ear.
