Getting pregnant after giving birth

I heard that you can not get pregnant after giving birth if you have not started having your period again yet. SOme people get pregnant again really fast so I am not sure if that is true or not. My sister got pregnant again one month after having her first baby. DOes anyone know if this is true or not?

I have a brother and a sister that are 2 days shy of 1 year apart in age, so my sister was 3 months old when my mom got pregnant with my brother.
I went to school with these girls that were born 9 months and 1 week apart. They were full term babies too, so that means their mother got pregnant about 1 week after giving birth.
