Widow Burning(SATI): Devotion or stupidity?

In india, they have this ancient practice called sati or widow burning. It was said that it is done some 700 years ago after their husbands have been defeated as not to be taken by the victors. On 1989, an 18-year old Roop Kanwar was burned to death in her husband's funeral which caused a world outrage. Even i am shocked that someone can do that. is it really her devotion to her husband or she was just too stupid to end up letting the people burn her? I really don't know but maybe she was just too devoted that she would follow her husband immediately in heaven or somewhere else.

I think that's absolutely crazy!! I'm reading an article about her somewhere on the internet now. Whether people go willingly or are forced, force being even worse, this is nuts!!! why should people think they have to die just because they have lost their spouses? I wouldn't do that, and my husband wouldn't do that either!
