When you are depressed, what do you do in order to recover?

I am a Freshman at a top university, and I admit that I am not good in Math. Though I can answer some complex problems, those far more than complex freak the hell out of me. The result is, I failed my Math subject which is the mother of all subjects for my course (Computer Science). Failing that Math subject means delay in my academics because I cannot take three major subjects which demand my failed Math subject as a prerequisite. Luckily, my family, friends and schoolmates are all understanding. They motivate me to cheer up and get over the whole thing and start new. Their efforts were all in vain, because I still can't move on. The fact is, I am an optimist. There are times that I enjoy things and yet still remember the failed Math subject, which depresses me. Though I try to hide my depression, I still heave heavy sighs and there's a frown sprawled on my face. It's difficult to be happy when you really are sad. I want a big time solution so that I can recover. Any suggestions?

How can you be depressed because of math? You have understanding friends and family. Plus, you got into the university in the first place. Some kids never even get on the lawns of the university unless they are mowing it. I myself never even got that far. I feel that with a math tutor and time that you will be fine. Don't be so hard on yourself no one is perfect. You learn the best things in life by your mastakes. So, cheer up and enjoy the fact that you got futher then most people ever will.

Yo nice response. I really like it. And its true. Some people don't get into institutes at all. And everybody DOES have a weakness on something. Like I hate Spanish class the most.(even though i am pretty good at it). Just listen to what Carpathian said and you will be fine. You have to trust in your self and the force will be with you. Peace out!

Hi Oh it's really sad. I hope you get over the mental crisis soon. To get out of depression, you need to leave behind your past and build up confidence. The root of your depression is your failure in Mathematics. And you can do better in maths only doing more and more practice. For this you need a rock solid determination. So my suggestion is very specific. Please don't cling on your past. Practice more and more. Take it as a challenge and believe that you can win the battle. Best of luck.

I'm sorry for your plight. But don't think much about that. Failures do happen to wake us up. When i'm depressed i usually talk to my friends. I chill out with them, even if it feels bad to do so. Stop thinking about what makes me sad. It really works for me this way.

Like what you said, you are an optimist yourself is the most important help for you to recover. With the family and friends encouragement may help but most of it must come from yourself. I have been in your situation though its not Math subject because that's the subject I truly like. There are really times that we gave our best but it seems not enough. I just told myself to accept the fact that I failed the subject and do better next time. Just continue your life and enjoy that's how you can over come it. When you keep turning back about that matter it may affect with your other subjects.

when im depressed, it's so hard for me to get through the day. it's torturing me each minute and would wonder when will it disappear. but no matter what, life has to go on. what i usually do is go out, see the world nearby. eat what ever food i want to even if it'll cost me much. read. listen to the radio. and sometimes i do things unexpected to divert depression at least for a while.

well, i would not suggest that you shift from computer science to another course because, firstly, i can feel that you like your course, and secondly, that would be a cowardly move. do not give up on the first "mini" failure. move on. just focus on where you want to go, friend. me, i finished my supposed to be four-year graduate course in eight years. but i now i have passed the qualifying exam and have my license already. i have classmates who promptly finished it in four years but have failed to get a license after repeated attempts. focus! in the mean time, do not forget to have good clean fun with friends and some enjoyable time with no one but yourself. take care!

i usually take time off... do the hobbies that i enjoy a lot like window shopping, reading, chatting with my friends on the phone, etc... the most important thing to do is i pray to God and let Him know all my problems... and He will help to take them away from me because He is a caring and loving God and He won't give us problems beneath what we can endure... i'm so sorry to hear that you failed your math subject... but i believe that it is not the end of the world and failure is usually the mother of success... so please don't give up and keep on trying... take care and have a nice day...

Don't let it get you down. We all have our strengths and weaknesses...I suck at math but I'm a whiz at reading. Get yourself a tutor, take a couple extra classes to boost your math and then get back on track. Hang in there and you'll make it. i usually keep very busy when i am down as it makes me feel better when i am productive and busy. if i give in to it it makes me feel worse and the less i do the less i want to do. so keeping busy has always been a remedy for me.

Hey there. Depression is something I have had on and off during my life, MOST severe when I was back in college, just like you are now. Fortunately I can say that (at least for me) I absolutely found the things to do, when depressed, to snap out of it. This is something that many amateurs will tell you, general advice like 'just snap out of it' or 'think positive' or other junk like that. Of course that doesn't work :D Now here's the stuff that I do, to keep me off depression, effectively: - Sports in the Morning. Depression is characterised by a LOW metabolism. It has chemicals in the brain specific to it, and also in the body. And those chemicals ONLY happen in a low metabolism. IF you do sports (run hard for just 10-20 minutes) in the morning, every day, in a week your state will be clearly changed. In the morning, because you metabolism stays up for several hours after a run. Fun or Team sports are even better, but make sure there's no Drama involved in the Team element, keep it fun :D - Sleep. This is a big one. you must get it, and if you don't you are staying open to depression. Use Melatonin pills to fully regulate your sleep cycles, for best results. Melatonin is a natural substance that your brain produces every evening. If you take pills with it for a week or two, just to regulate your clock, you will sleep deeper, your body will recharge, happy hormones will hit you good, and things will go veeeeery smoothly. Please do it, melatonin is cheap, no prescription, it is NOT a sleeping pill, and even mentally it wil organize you better. By having that pill YOU will have control of your sleep and your life. You can do like most people and say 'oh I can do it without' - do this at your choosing, know that you're just wasting your own time and depriving yourself of good stuff :D - Vitamins - maybe you don't take them usually, whatever. Do this now, take some good quality multivitamins - the strong ones are recommended only for 10 days, one pill per day. This WILL make a difference, you WILL be able to do more, accomplish more, and then you'll have more reasons to be satisfied in your life - Personal project - take any personal project that has a very SHORT timespan, like 1-2 weeks, 3 weeks at the very most. Whether it's losing some pounds, or improving your game in tennis, painting or drawing skills, whatever YOU have interest in and maybe you've always wanted to do. The more you do by yourself and the less people you tell about it, the better results you will have. Nothing like starting a strong initiative that comes from deep within you :) Hope some of this helps. if you want read some more of my discussions, you might find other ideas of use. Peace :)

You see, everybody has his own way of of dealing with it. Even though people generally advice taking a break on whatever you do that brings you the stress condition, I use a rather simple method to get rid of it. When I become stressed up, I just lie down on my back with my eyes closed. I then imagine myself walking down the beach and taking a look at the waves as they roll over and hit the sea-bed. Most importantly, I get up in about five to ten minutes for a glass of chilled water and that does the magic for me.

I found that the best way to overcome general depression is to do something for someone else. I believe that part of the reason why depression occurs is because we've been wounded in some way and now all of our attention is on ourselves. We should keep the focus on ourselves when beginning the healing process (while trying to work things out within ourselves), but if we haven't completely healed after a period of time, then we have to turn our attention away from ourselves for a while and direct it somewhere else. Acts of helping others becomes a great way to help ourselves because it's wonderful thing to help someone in need -- I always marvel at the satisfying feeling that results from helping others! Start by asking your family and friends if there isn't something you can help them with or do for them. If they're ok, then try your school and volunteer your services there. If nothing there, any kind of volunteer work should be sufficient.

When i am depressed i ignore the person i am angry or disappointed at. But even if i still want to be angry, the next day I always recover. And failing math is really bad!!! Espeacially is you are taking computer science. One advice is that you should study more harder. You could also go to after school activities that are based on math. And by the way I love math! It is so simple. But I hate math class! It is so boring. I could ace the test without even being taught. During class I wish I could just die or skip the class. Sometimes I fell like sleeping. And I agree with you too. Word problems and then making equations based on the writing really freaks me out too! That is the only spot I need to improve on. By the way I am in 7th grade and I take Algebra 1 Honors. And just try harder next time. Trust me, you WILL improve!!

when im depressed about anything i usually do of the following I usually find some of my favorite songs ( ones that make you dance) and put them on and then I write out how I feel. I also try to write out how i feel. Dont try to let it get you down. Try a tutor. DOnt be afraid to ask for help. There are people that will be willing to help you. motivation also help too. Keep that in mind everytime and do the best you can. I am not good at math but i dont let it get me down. Well not anymore. I wish i had a better answer but as long as you have family, friends someone to talk to that usually helps me on the road to recovery.

Well, Mr Freshman...........sometimes a good cry will help with the blues, but that might not be a guy thing. Why not look for a tutor? Maybe you are super in one subject and you can trade tutoring skills. Call home and talk to your Mom. She'll always be there. Especially if you work up some tears! GOOD LUCK.

It's good that you have your friends that help you. I think in order for you to get over your depression in Math I suggest you take the subject again (if that is allowed) and this time do everything you can to get a high grade on it. Take it a s a challenge that would motivate you rather than let it depress you. They say that the only way out of a problem is through it so maybe in order to get over it, you should go take it again and don't think that you'll fail at it rather,do your best. Also if your from a top university I think it's normal to fail a subject once in a while, especially now your a first year student, maybe you are still adjusting. Just stay positive it will really help you.

When I am depressed,i often play football or listen to music. However, this method may not be suitable for you,you should learn to self-regulate.Good luck to you.
