Photos going digital a good thing or a bad thing?

The last five years most of my photos have been digital. They're posted on my website, saved on my computer, saved on CD and now even saved on the little chips that you put into the camera. But, you know, there is a long family tradition of photos that are printed out on paper. I have photos that go back to the 1800's and although I have scanned many of them in and posted them, so that family members who are distant can see them, I have the hard copies to pass on to my kids too. So now I am thinking about all these digital photos that I have and wondering if I should start printing them out so that I have a paper record of them too. Who knows how safe they really are in digital format. Hmmmmm.....

All I own are digital cameras now, but the really good shots I do have printed. The good thing about them being digital now is that there isn't so much waste. I remember back when everything had to be printed and there were so many pics that were wasted shots, or really nice pictures that had something in them that didn't look too good- now we can put the picture on the computer, edit it, and have it printed out.

Yes, i think going digital is good. I also have been scanning my old pics to save on a CD. They make excellent slide shows. Ya know the kind that all visitors dread when the come visit you. Lol! They can also be shared online with family. But it is a good idea to have them printed too. The paper is kind of expensive. But one day i may catch up.

I like digital photos for the many uses .But I just don't like the old film photos to be forgotten so easily.I just adore that medium still.

This topic is close to my heart in I have also been digital for quite a few years now and I have thousands of pics in my computer. I know it is thousands as on one trip I came home with over 800 pictures. LOL! I have been working on the printed out photos and albums from long ago that my children while younger thought they shouldnt be in albums I guess. Im almost done. Then I need to so the ones on my computer as I know it could crash and Id would lose them all. Hubby bought me a whold bunch of CD's to save them too. I have to get my butt moving on this as I am afraid that one day something would happen and their would go wedding pics, pics of my grandbabies being born, along with lots more. I have to print lots out too as I really like having in that form too.

i thinks that digitalisation of photo is good on its own but user must not take it for negetive works just to create fake images but inspite of that now a day we are more benifitted by the igitalisation of the photos we can add our photos withour elder ohotos so as to keep itas memory etc............ u know every thing hasa bad and a good way it depends on the walker what he selects............ bye.........

All are going digital in this growing world but still in contries like India, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan people use the older method, the paper picture even they take print of digital pictures on paper format. the reason is that these countries are not much IT enabled so to share there pictures with relatives.

But here in the US where we are digital, I'm starting to think it's still a good idea to keep print copies, at least of the better photos!

It is good and bad. Now that I know how to put them on the computer it is nice. We have a nice photo album on the computer and we can share that any time. There is however something to be said about having actual pictures that you can hold in your hand though. Plus with a computer there is always that risk of losing everything. There are a few different sites on line that will send you prints of your digital pictures. All you have to do is download them, and then order them. So I think from now on if a picture is especially important, like a birthday picture, I will just order a print off of the internet of it.

I may do that too. Easier than printing them myself, actually!

I think the digital age is brilliant and saves a lot of money for those of us who love photography. However I do miss the days of waiting for a film to be developed and having actual photographs to look at. We are lucky to now have the option to print out our favourites, which I need to do...

I think photos going digital is a great advantage. You can just simply delete the photos you don't want while as before when we use films in taking picture, we wouldn't know if we look good in the picture or if the picture was taken properly unless after we have printed it. Now you can save on the printing just by choosing only the ones the you like to be printed out

I think that they may be going hand in hand. I know many scrapbookers who love to digitally do all sorts of things for their albums. So in that case, digital is used but the result is paper. I'm not sure how big the craze is in California, but it is HUGE in the Midwest!

A picture that has not been printed is not really real! and it isn't safe, either...you are quite t=right to be worried about the longevity of pictures stored digitally, especially in jpg format. CDs and DVDs are not as long-lasting as archival paper. While archival papers and modern poigment inks will last 180 years under correct storage conditions, manufacturers suggest DVDs will last 20 years - they don't promise that, but they expect it. No think about CDs and DVDs: how many have you thrown away this year? Not just the scratched ones, but the ones that just failed? How many hard disk crashes have you had? Blu Ray has just won th High Definitions wars, but it doesn't look like being around for more than a few more months, and hard drives are going under to solid state drives: can you still read the prints you stored on floppy disks a few years ago? Didn't think so. The same will be tru about DVDs soon, and every time you transfer from one medium to another, your precious memories are at risk. Rather than take up any more space, I suggest you have a look at my article on protecting your photos at www.qassia.com/protecting-your-photos-and-image-files

I think digital photos is better than printing photos. These digital photos have some features which is having saving option. We can save it in cds or in computer. If you want to see them in any time it will be available. If it is in paper format it will be damaged after some time. But it is in digital format it will be safe for long time. Happy to share. Happy myLotting.

I think that print it out only when need to do so, because printing will cost you more natural resources. Digital camera is a great invention, even professional users love it, but ofcourse will still need film camera.

In many case it is good. as the photos are digital, you are ready to carry it in different ways and media. also they can be printed at photo shops. so its not a problem about hard copies as well.

To me, it is a good thing. I can save a lot in this way, you know a SD card can save more then 500 photoes, so it free me from buying films. So we can save a lot, while have more photoes in that way. But to many professors, it is not a good news, for digital photo in some way not as good as a film photo, it can not keep some senses clearly enough.

I don't think them being digital are the best of things. I don't have many printed though. It just seems too easy to keep them digital and email them around instead of paying for them to be printed.

What is not to like. Digital cameras take way better pictures than old film cameras ever did. You can take as many pictures as you want because if it is out of focus or has a thumb in the way *poof* it is deleted right at the camera. No more paying good money for rolls of mediocre and out of focus pictures. I would get your favorite pictures printed out and even enlarged to display on the wall or in a frame elsewhere and even to share with relatives so they can do the same. Remember though nothing lasts forever even photos, especially color photos. The photos that survived from the 1800's were silver based black and white, probably on acid free paper so can last hundreds of years. The modern dyes of color photography's life is only decades and only if kept away from humidity, heat and especially light. Even the recordable cd's estimated life is 75 years for the green and 100 years for the gold coloured ones. The recordable ones are changes in a dye so do not last as long as the printed ones which are pits in the plastic covered with a metallic coating.
