Just Why Is It?????

That many of us women who are of the pagan/wiccan path have long hair? Okay this isn't some deep, philosophical discussion here and maybe I'm just a tad influenced by the fact that it is Halloween (Samhain) and have just finished watching the movie Practical Magic. But it seems to me those who follow the pagan/wiccan path, and therefore witches have always been depicted as having long flowing hair even in times past. I for one do have long hair...I'm both a follower of pagan/wiccan traditions and part Native American (another group who has a preference to long hair female OR male). So here's the question....for those who DO follow the pagan/wiccan path female or male...do YOU have long hair? Why? Do you feel having long hair has some special significance? Or do you just plain like your hair long? Is there some special meaning to having long hair and "witches"....why? Just wondering. My own hair is nearly waist length and I refuse to cut it...don't know why, but there it is. LOL...I can't therefore wonder if people in general who have long hair are....gasps...witches...meaning hey, maybe there's more of us out there than we think....heehee

Hey pye! Well, I wish that I could have really long hair like you! But, unfortunately although I have always had a penchant for all things witchy/pagan/wiccan my hair doesn't fit the description! I have dark very curly frizzy hair! Now have you ever seen a witch with hair like that? Of course not! So what can I do? I can't straigten it anymore because I color it to get the grey out! It is also thin/fine! Great! So, I would be the laughing stock of the pagan/wiccan/witches! So what am I supposed to do? Do you have a suggestion? I have let my hair grow for the last 2 years, but it will never look anything like it should! It does look scary though!lol I would be the only one in the circle with frizzy hair on Samhain!

You know what's not bad to straighten hair? My hair is naturally thick wavy, and curly too..hated it. I've always admired board straight hair, so years and years ago, going back to my high school days I straighten it..know how? I iron it! Yup.

Well... I had long hair for 43 years and I will go to my grave with long hair. It started in 1965 with the Beatles and just got worse with the hippie movement in 67. For me... it has been most of all a form of sticking it to the establishment. It did not achieve anything... But it did piss off a lot of people with my refusal to conform "Men should wear short hair". I dare to be different... And that scare the sh.t out of people. I love scaring the sh.t out of people... lol

Ahh..a person of my heart..the true non-conformist, listening to the different drummer type...I'm an Old Hippie sort too, but sure you don't have a bit of the "pagan" in you though? I HATE men with short crew cut, neat hair.

I can top that. I was baptized Catholic, confirmed Protestant, haven't been inside a church either since I was fifteen (except once to visit St. Patrick's in Manhattan NY), studied a bit of Buddhism, Hinduism, esoteric schools (Rosicrucians). Through my great grandmother became acquainted with Unity and Science of Mind...but only seven years ago felt the Pagan/wiccan path was the right one for me. As for you cat..LOL..yup, he's a dirty old pervert...heehee. Who is to say though that maybe cats and animals in general don't have their religion...we just don't know about it....heehee

HI {{PYE }}, That's one of those questions that make you go "hmmm"...LOL! I too used to have long hair in fact it was so long I could sit on my hair, but since the car accident it has gotten shorter and shorter and now its the shortest its ever been; I cannot stand my hair on the back of my neck/nor have it touching my neck, yeah it hurts that bad, who knew your hair could literally cause you pain, but when you have that severe of a neck injury, it does ( trust me )...I wear the thinest material I can too clothes wise, I just can't take the weight of anything on my neck; But yeah I think long beautiful hair does seem to sorta fit the image; I think its great you still are able to have your hair long, I'm so jealous... I also think its wonderful to be able to discuss pagan/wiccan topics, Shoot even 10 or more years ago, it was still a bit "iffy" to discuss these sort of belief's! I love the pagan/wiccan ways, I love all things related to it, always have; I love Native American ways and their belief's, always have; I love all things "Celtic" and there again most of that follows along the pagan/wiccan beliefs and history; Its all so fascinating to me !

Wow I didn't realize you had so much pain with your neck like that. And yes, my how times have changed and we can openly discuss Pagan/wiccan topics....I'm definitely out of the broom closet...LOL. I really don't care who knows I'm a witch and don't feel the need to hide that fact.

I had long hair for years before I became involved in Wicca, and still have very long hair years after I became uninvolved with Wicca. Thinking back to the group rituals I used to go to, I seem to remember that there were almost as many men with flowing locks as there were women. It seems to go with life-affirming religions. I remember a song by Sidney Carter (the Lord of the Dance man) about George Fox, founder of the Quakers, which had the chorus: With your old leather britches and your long and shaggy locks, (x3) You are pulling down the pillars of the world George Fox. I think the long hair idea is from the Story of Sampson I think. His hair was his strength. Once cut he was a "commoner" then. Maybe, I am not sure. Just one idea I have about that. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I can't help wonder when it became the so-called fashion for men to have hair short, since up until a certain time, even men had long hair (and beards..now it's the norm for men to be clean shaven)

thats funny and never really thought about it that way. Daughter has long hair down past waist line she lost most of it years back after a break down now its that long she wont cut. She wont let her hubby cut either and his is soooooo thin looks horrible lol. Me I enjoy my short hair for it is so much easier to keep up. And its wavy when long I always kept it swept back or in a french twist so just cut it when I get tiered of it.

Could it be because those in the Wiccan way of life are more natural or earthy? It seems that the mylot members who are pagan or Wiccan are more in tune with their surroundings, and more free. I can't really put into words what I mean by free. I'm not talking hippie... Perhaps I'm not making much sense.

lol. I understand that. My mother didn't want me to cut mine. It used to be halfway down my back. I probably cut mine cause she didn't want me too. The first time I cut she didn't talk to me for 2 days. Its funny how we rebel against our parents.

I've only known one short-haired witch myself but she kept it short out of convenience as she just didn't like her hair long. Yup, I've heard that too, that one's strength is in one's hair. Guess we must be strong people, no?

You are pagan/wiccan too are you? I did not know that. I have been watching a ghost hunting programme all week in UK called "Most Haunted" and it has been running live. My kids have taken a bit of an interest in it and the other night this Most Haunted "apparently" had spirits of witches with them. Now my 6 year old son was watching and he was talking about witches and how they look, to his perception a witch is an old haggy woman with warts and long hair, not just long hair. I tried to explain to him that this was not true and told him that a lot of my friends that I talk to on myLot were witches and that they did not look like that. He did not believe me at all, so sorry about that but my son thinks that not only do you all have long hair, you have warts and wrinkles too!

Well, I am pagan, and my hair is short. It was long when I was young mainly because my parents wouldn't allow me to cut it. When I was about 12 they finally let me cut it to shoulder length. My hair if baby fine and the tangles were torturous. Since that time it has been anywhere from just past my shoulders to cropped to a spiky style. I just like for it to be easy to care for. It doesn't have anything to do with my religious beliefs.

I wish I could grow my hair that long, but I can't. My hairdresser friend says people are like cats, some are long-haired and some are short-haired. I guess I'm just a short-haired cat. My actual preferred hair length is bald. But I started growing my hair out when I started working at a bank.

I'm Pagan and I do have long hair myself. My hair is about waist length and I refuse to cut it. I for one do like my hair long. I really like long hair. I think it's gorgeous. Secondly, I think long hair is kind of like powerful. I feel like cutting your hair is kind of a bad thing as it takes away your power and your natural beauty. But that's really just how I see it.

My beliefs have nothing to do with me having long hair. My hair is currently down to my waist, but only because my husband asked me to grow it long after my last haircut (which was shoulder length). As he loves it when I have long hair I agreed to it.

Well I think it is because we are closer to nature and long hair is natural. Both my partner and I have long hair and I love long hair. I am not sure if there is any particular meaning to it. My mother always told me that when you grow up you cut your hair as it is not seemly for a older woman to have long hair as it is a girlish thing to do. I think she was totally wrong and I plan to have long hair as long as I live or at least as long as I am able to. If I end up in a home one day and they make me cut it, grrrr, I may not be able to. I think it looks wonderful. I also tend to like long flowing dresses and skirts as well but it gets too hot in summer here for such things.

I think women cutting their hair short as they get older is a relatively "new" idea..thinking back to my great-grandmother's day, it was the norm to keep one's hair long until old age.. Yup, I intend to keep my hair long until I'm old and gray myself..LOL. I love those long flowing type skirts, have a few...ironically they are called broomstick skirts...that kind of strikes me funny for some reason
