In most countries the legal retirement age for men is five years older than for women, even though women live longer than men on average. Why do you think this is? Is this fair, or should it be changed?

Hello mylottians thank you for posting your comments. Hi friend in my country INDIA the retirement age is 58 years for both men and woman. But when to speak about longer life what i say is it depends upon the health condition of an individual. if you take a proper health man he live equal as a unconditioned woman. But in general MEN == +5years WOMEN. Thank you have a nice time keep mylotting.

In my country, Philippines retirement age is 60years for both men and women. That age is fair for the pensioners. Life span in my country seems shorter than in other country. Maybe it's because current social condition as well as the climate.

In UK it is 65 for men and 60 for women and will take ten years to be equalised! Yes, this is absurd and unfair and well done for noticing this. This is one of the many ways in which the government favours women and this has been around for a long time. Originally of course it was to 'protect' women and to ensure that men could work as it was felt that women shouldn't do so. Thirty + years of feminisim have reversed that attitude but the government have hung on to many of the ways in which women were and are treated more favourably. The retirement age should be scrapped immediately, not phased in over ten years. People should be able to choose when they wish to retire depending on health and other personal factors from say aged 60 onwards. There are around 200 cases of age discrimination on hold waiting for a judgement from the European Court of Human Rights on this issue at the moment.
