My Foot is Broken Apparently...

Okay, yesterday I had to give in and let my daughter take me to the emergency room to have my foot checked out. I knew I was dealing with a fallen arch because I have had that problem before. But this was much, much worse. The xrays did not show anything, but the doctor said it could still be fractured and there could be stress fractures. He is treating me like it is fractured and had me put in a "moon boot". So has anyone had to wear one of these things? I have never had a broken bone before. Lots of sprains, though. But I have never had to wear a cast or anything like that. This "moon boot" is heavy. It feels like it weighs 50 lbs. The pain medicine isn't working very well. Tomorrow I have an appointment with a foot doctor. Okay, so tell us all about your experiences with broken bones, casts, and "moon boots".

Apparently it does the same thing that a cast does in keeping the injured foot immobile, but it is foam and velcro straps with a heavy plastic bottom that is slightly curved so that the foot is not fully flat on the floor. I was going to take a picture of it, but right now I don't feel up to it. I am sure that I will take one eventually. Just imagine what astronauts wear as their boots...it looks like that. Big and bulky. Mine is gray foam with black straps and trim and base. The boot can be removed as needed where the cast can't. That is a big plus to having the boot.

So far I have never experienced any broken bones before. Thank god for that but I have experience sprain ankles before. It's not that bad as broken bones but still not a very pleasant experience to go through. I hope you get well soon and back on your two feet. I know with this small handicap its pretty nuisance to move around.. Take care

Thanks for the well wishes. Maybe it is my age, but I know this is about as bad as I have ever experienced before. I have had bad sprains where I could not put weight on my injured foot. But this feels different...a different kind of pain. Sprains are no fun, you are right about that.

I haven't seen you here for a while! I have had a slightly broken foot before. I dropped one of the large glass measuring cups on it. The moon boot has helped me on several occasions though as it does wonders for the stress pain on the feet! My daughter had her foot broken when she was 8 months old. I was holding her and getting something out of the front passenger seat of my van. My other daughter slammed her sliding door and the babies foot happened to be in the way of it. I thought I was going to throw up on the rush to the er. They said it was not broken and to resume normal activities asap. My doc called me 2 days later and said it actually was broken, not to let her put any pressure on it for a couple weeks! Those er docs must make boatloads of money misdiagnosing ppl! Especially here in my town!

I took some time off from here for a few days. I was getting tired of all the political discussions taking up so much space. Oh my, as a mother I can only imagine what you went through with your concern about your daughter's foot. That really had to hurt! I do think that ER doctors have a lot of problems diagnosing things. LOL Maybe we go to the same hospital! But then I guess if it is swollen, the xrays don't show well if there are fractures. I am glad they finally got the right diagnosis for your daughter though.

I have never had a broken bone before but my son (when h was 12) broke his ankle playing baseball. We went to the Er that evening and the Dr. put a cast on it and gave him some pain meds and sent us on our way. About 2:00 am he woke up screaming in pain and back to the er we went. His BP was very high and what had happened was they casted his foot before the swelling went down and it swelled up over the cast. They had to cut th cast off.Oh yes we had a lovely fight with the Dr. at the ER. He went to the orthopedic Dr. the next day and they put him in a moon boot for three days then casted the foot. It was a nightmare. But he never had any problem with the moon boot or the cast for that matter after they got the swelling down.

Oh gee! That had to really hurt! That is the good thing about the boot. You can take it off as needed, loosen as needed. Mine is doing better with an ace wrap on my foot first. The heel didn't fit right and kept slipping around even though it is on tight. The swelling seems to be getting worse rather than better though. Sometimes I think the boot has made it worse even though it makes it easier to walk with the boot. I can't put weight on it at all without the boot and only slight pressure on it with the boot.

Ouch. You may need to loosen it to releive some pressure. Better yet take advantage of sitting back and propping it up and let everyone else wait on you! LOL I know easier said than done but hey if it works go for it! Hope you feel better soon!
