I remember when the movie Steel Magnolias was released, and all the discussion of feminine strength. Who are your best examples of women who are strong and feminine? No restrictions - name women from fiction, movies, comic books, real life or your own personal experience. Tell me about strong, inspirational women.

I have met so many in my lifetime it is hard to pick just a few. My step-mother who just recently passed. She was a woman of great strength, compassion, and faith. Her first child was born with Downs Syndrom at a time when little was known and most families placed these children in the care of the state. My mom instead kept my sister at home and went on to fight the State of Texas for education funding, books, and ultimately was instrumental in many of the Special Needs educational changes in public schools. After her first husband passed away at a young age she returned to college and received her degree in education, all while raising 5 children. She eventually became a teacher in West Texas and earned many awards for her dedication and commitment to her students. She married my Dad twenty years ago but I have known her all my life, she has always been one of my heros. My niece who works and excells in a very male dominated profession. She kicks butt. I have watched her grow from a somewhat shy young girl to a woman of backbone, ethics, and strength. She is focused, funny, and sure of her moral compass at all times. She continues to build her life from a foundation that was not always on solid ground but which she was always able to find the best of. There are so many others, but today those are my two best.

I have to tell you, lvaldean, that it was your discussion about your step-mother and what she was like that inspired me to post this discussion. You had said in your response to me on that discussion that she was - and I'm paraphrasing for the general idea - an example of a true Southern lady. I'm very happy that you found this discussion and posted more about her, and your niece sounds a great deal like my daughter, who is one of my heroes. Isn't it marvelous to see young women becoming strong, bold women who live the strength of their convictions?

I am indeed heartened when I see young women living up to their potential in the world. It is really wonderful to watch them especially when you have watched them from young children. I am glad that I could inspire you.
