I don't know you so why do I buy magazines about you?

Walk down the shelves of any UK news-agent and you will be assailed by any number of celebrity magazines. "Hello, OK, Heat", seems like there are dozens of them. Each has the same layout. A "celebrity" wedding. A peek inside someone's house or the "true" story of TV rivals or co-hosts. They are mostly aimed a women. But why are folk so fascinated by this stuff. These are people who in the main are of no importance whatsoever in our lives. People who are often famous just for being famous. "It" girls and boys. Reality TV show survivors etc. Do you buy these magazines and if so why?

I don't have to buy magazines really since my mother is the magazine buyer and once she buys them and reads them gathers the info she wants out of them then give them to me. I have a whole lot but they are mostly Kraft food,weight watcher,Goodhousekeeping, First and a few others but I love reading about celebrity lives, I don't know why I am so intrigued about it I just am. Maybe because sometimes it lets us have a glimpse of something normal about them after we have built them up in our heads.

My mom is forever chasing the "Miracle Diet" and every magazine that has anything about a diet on it she buys it. I like goodhousekeeping It is a good tasteful magazine. A little something for everyone in their magazine.

I think that I have a problem with the notion of celebrity, especially in respect of reality shows people. They are made out to be something that they are not - talented and interesting - and companies then sell their "stories" through magazines which are lapped up. Nothing wrong with a little escapism, but it's just not my way of doing it. Now I love Good Housekeeping. LOL.

Hey p1ke! I'm with you on this one! No way! I couldn't care less about these people! They have too much money and too much of everything. I don't intend to make them any richer than they already are! I'm not about to buy those stupid magazines too. I will peak in them if I have nothing better to do, but I refuse to buy them! Besides, you can read half of that stuff online anyway if you choose! I used to be interested but I don't even watch tv anymore since I am too busy mylotting! It's like I have given up all my interests just to be here answering discussions and making pennies to help pay my bills! I much rather spend time here with my friends then see what some rich celebrity is doing with their tons of money! It's not like their going to share it with us!

In fact it makes them richer Opal. I don't mind how much money they have, but I just don't see anything remotely newsworthy in the fact that someone that I have never heard of has ditched someone else that I have never heard of and is going out with her best friend, who I've never heard of!! LOL.

I never buy these magazines.It's bad enough that you're forced to listen to stuff about so-called ceebrities when you're trying to watch the news but paying to find out about them is not for me.

I'm not a celeb magazine buyer either. Most of them I've never even heard of, let alone care about.

Hi, P1ke. I don't see the appeal in these mags. Besides, if I choose the wrong playgroup to attended every once in a while I get caught up on all the celebrity gossip... so why would I waste my time to read about it?? I do admit to picking up the occassional fashion magazine. Even though I hate seeing the anorexic models I do enjoy seeing what is happening in the fashion world now and then. at myself right now, but I am a women and I do like pretty things. Hee

Nothing wrong with Vogue or whatever. It's just the vacuous nonentities that whole magazines are devoted to that get me.

I buy them occasionally if there's somebody on the cover who is interesting to me. But most of today's celebrities are not.

Apparently so. I rather liked him in Spartacus (which I always confuse with Ben Hur. But that was Charlton Heston. I don't think that he married C ZJ!).

I don't know who half of them are. My wife has to keep reminding me that it wasn't Kirk Douglas who married Catherine Zeta Jones!

I don't buy those kind of magazines because i don't really care about celebrity lifestyles and what not. However my best friends is, i swear, addicted to them and she always shares the interesting tidbits with me. I don't mind, but its really not my thing.

When I was a teen and wanted to know every move of the Fab Four or my favorite spy (David McCallum) I did buy those kinds of things. These days I'm not so entralled with folks on TV, the movies or the music scene.

It's funny that I should run across this just now. My one and only Squidoo lens is about this very subject. I just added it to my profile in case you ever wanna take a look. I buy them because other people's drama makes mine feel like a piece of cake! I wouldn't say I am fascinated by them though.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

I'll have a look at your lens. I agree about the gossip etc. I do sometimes wonder how we have got through 22 years of marriage without my having made 45 other women pregnant, been involved in a high speed police chase, appeared on a reality TV show to vainly re-awaken my career, been photographed drunk in the gutter and stripped for Playgirl. I really do lead a quiet life! LOL.

You are not the only one who enjoys drama and gossip....I think you response is one that can applied to nearly everyone who purchases these magazines. People in general are out to find gossip, whether the gossip is to make them feel better aboutthemself as you have stated, or just to find something to talk about with other people.

Hi ya p1kef1sh I actually don't ever buy these type of magazines, never have done. I don't really care who is having an affair with who or who has just lost 3 stone ect. Deep down they are normal people and these sort of things happen to lots of people every day.

I have to say my aunt is a fan of some local magazines which feature local celebrities. Well, I do read them because it is fan reading some controversies attached to these celebrities.

no, i dont buy them and come to think ofv it, i dont even look at them at the library! i go to the library to read the magazines i would like to get but cannot afford nor have room to store. the ones i read are mostly about decorating and crafting. as for famous people, i really dont care who is pregnant, who is dating whom and whatnot. what does that have to do with me?
@p1kef1sh (45681)

Unless I did it I've no interest either. Thank you Cher.

I belong to a survey site that only offer magazine subscriptions so I do surveys, rake up the points and request whatever I think may be interesting. I've subscribed to the Golf magazine for my hubby and Prevention for me. These were free :) I read people.com online just to be nosey and my friend gave me a years subscription to Oprah magazine as a birthday present. Some articles are interesting to read. My neighbor subscribes to quite a few magazines and when she's done with them she passes them on to me, mostly home type magazines like Better Homes and Gardens, Country Living, etc. I like looking at the pictures mostly lol.

You're very honest! On the odd occasion that I look at them it's the pictures that get looked at. Usually the words alongside are rubbish anyway.

I don't buy those magazines because I think it's a waste of money. I love entertainment news and all gossip though which I check online on blogs. I guess I'm hooked on them even if I don't really know them because when they wear really nice shoes or drive an expensive car or have a really hot boyfriend, it allows me to dream of having those things myself? But I'm not really sure. This is a great question, I'll have to think of why I love gossip...

O I buy them. Everyone likes to see that celebrities with all their money and looks still have problems and many times worse than ours. So sadly it makes us feel good about ourselves that we are better than that person that society has put on a petastool.
@p1kef1sh (45681)
10 Nov 08
So that's the reason. LOL.

10 Nov 08
The answer is quite simple acutally. Sociey is obsessed with gossip and drama! If you think about it, what do you talk about with your friends, coworkers,and family...I bet it is safe to say that majority of what you talk will revolve around talking about some one else or something that has occurred. Talking about others is what majority of us do, whether the coversations are postive or negative. So by purchasing magazines about celebrities you are getting the gossip about people you do not know personally but people you know of, even if you know of the person from seeing them act in a movie or television series.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

I gossip, but not about "famous" stars. My dramas are strictly domestic too. However, I can readily understand how the lives of the rich and so called famous can appear to be more interesting.
