Fulfilling a Dream in Travel

Recently, my 72 year old father completed a goal he's been working toward for years - visiting every one of the fifty states in the U.S. He and my mom have traveled a great deal both overseas and in the states in the past twenty years, and he has been marking off the states and countries that he has visited on a map. This summer, he and my mom took a long road trip to visit some of the states he'd never visited and when he came home, he marked off the last five states on the map. I asked him if he was going to stop traveling now that he's reached his goal and he said that he still had a lot of countries to reach. Have you got any traveling goals? Is there a place you dream about visiting? Do you think that you'll ever achieve your goal?

I must admit that I would like to go to Hawaii, to Ireland, to India, and to the Redwoods (the Redwoods would be a repeat trip) yet I have as yet no realistic plan to go to any of these places... And as I am presently unemployed, the chances of going anywhere now are very limited. Who knows though what the future will bring? I hope much better, the money to travel and friends and/or family to travel with as it would not be fun to travel alone.

Italy and Greece are tops on my list, because they represent a part of my heritage. All of my traveling so far has been within the States, with the exception of a trip to Canada when I was a child, and like you, money makes it impossible for me to travel right now, but I look forward to the day when I can pack up and go.

Yes, my ultimate goal in life is actually to travel the world. I started by going for a two-week trip to China last month. Next month, I'm planning a trip to Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Malaysia. In January, Im going to Ethopia. I am starting to achieve my dream! And I could not contain the excitement. Your parents' story even inspired me more.

I'm glad my parents inspired you to keep working toward your dream. I think, actually, that they've been to all the places that you named, as well as my dad fulfilling one of his personal dreams - to return to Korea, where he was stationed during the Korean war. My own biggest dream right now is to manage at least one trip to Italy, to see the town where my mother was born and meet my relatives there face to face.
