International Members: Moneybookers Banning Other Countries, What Now?

United States
November 13, 2008 6:25pm CST
As most of you already know, we just got an alert stating that MyLot members that are not in the United States can no longer use MoneyBookers Accounts. MoneyBookers is no longer transferring funds overseas as of the end of the month. Those that have MoneyBookers accounts currently will be able to get one last payout, as long as their balance is over the amount of $4.50. This doesn't affect me personally, since I am in the States, and have a PayPal account attached. But this raised a question for my friends who are in this situation, especially those in countries that PayPal doesn't cover. So I decided to ask you guys directly. If this situation affects you personally, what are you planning to do? Will you still participate as much as you did before, knowing that you will not be able to receive your payout? I guess this will weed out those who are here just for the money, and those that are here for the community, at least for those that are affected by this recent change. But what do you plan to do?

I also wondered about this when I received the alert, drknlvly. As a Paypal user myself, I would not be affected, but I don't see how members who don't have Paypal could reasonably be expected to put in much effort when there is nothing to be gained. The money I earn here is insignificant for the most part, but I would expect some compensation for my work since this is a paying site. I don't envy those members who must make the choice to either stay or go.

Its not a choice of staying or leaving per se. Its the determination of how valuable this site is to these people who are affected by this development. People that believe that this site is more valuable than the money that they were getting to participate will stay. However, those that don't believe so will probably fall to the wayside. They may check back every now and again to see if an alternative is put into place, but if its not made soon, we will lose that group of people permanently.

Yes i too received the mail from mylot saying they are banning the moneybookers account and shall not pay after 14th Nov and they must be having atleast $4.5 to receive there payouts hence they need to really work hard to reach this target and the people who have only moneybookers as there source need to find a way to get there payout from now onwards.

That is too correct. My question is does this affect you? If it does, what do you plan to do in light of this new development?

I have a little money in Moneybookers, but I use Paypal here. But it costs more to transfer it then the money that is in it. I live in Canada, by the way. I have not received any letter from Moneybookers about this.

I don't think that you will receive any notice from Moneybookers. This is something that is strictly between them and MyLot, so it wouldn't make sense to alert the entire membership of MoneyBookers, when most of them probably haven't heard of MyLot to begin with.

I am just saddened by the development, I have not really thought of this much until I realized that there is a need to subscribe now to Paypal. Anyways, good thing is that I have a paypal account, it's just that I have to get this EON card (an online card) since I am a bit scared to use my credit card since it might be hacked. I am just so used with moneybookers though and really it's a sad development.

According to the alert Moneybookers is suspending the transfer of money from the USA to accounts held by non-US citizens. This is not the same as banning. The suspension may not last forever. It may have something to do with the economic crisis. Moneybookers may be following instructions given by the US government. I do not intend to leave myLot yet. I have a PayPal account. Even though currently I am not allowed to transfer whatever money I have in the account into my bank account, I can still use it for Internet transactions. The situation is not that bad. Barring unresolved unforeseen circumstances I will still be around.

That does make a little sense. I must have missed the part about suspending and inserted banning instead. Sorry everyone for the mixup. But I hope that this is resolved quickly, because I don't want to see a big loss of people for the simple fact of not being paid.

Everyone in someway got here because of the getting paid portion. Well can't they try using alterpay or something?? It really does stink for those users who can't use paypal. I have a paypal account so it's not an issue for me... but i feel sorry for those who invest their time here and really take the time to help others out... I hope an alternative is found soon.

Yeah for as long as there is Paypal then I think I am okay with it. It's just that we have only have one option. I just hope that Paypal would not follow suit. This is something out of control of Mylot.

I don't think PayPal will do the same. They are a big company that does a lot of its business overseas, so I think they are safe. I believe Moneybookers is doing this because of the economy, and now that the U.S. Dollar has fallen so much in value, its costing them too much to exchange it into other funds in other countries. I really hope this is a temporary thing, I have friends here that this affects, and I wouldn't want to lose them over something so trivial.
