How much is too much?

Maybe I'm just being stingy but...we got our boys' photos taken, professionally last weekend. It was a fundraiser for our MOPS group is the only reason i had them taken. Then I got the price list...yikes. The first package starts at $120 and each package after that increases by $30. If you buy the $180 package then you get to choose 12 sheets of whatever poses and whatever sized photos you like. So if I buy, I want the choice of choosing the sheets. Otherwise you get 8x10's and I don't want anything larger than 5x7. This comes out to $16 a sheet. I've had some people tell me that's cheaper than other photographers they've gone too. I really don't want to spend that much money on pictures, but on the other hand that would take care of most of the adult christmas gifts as well. What's your opinion or what have you paid for proff. pictures?

I always go into the photo sitting with a price in my head as my limit. I stick to it and it's amazing how you can "whittle" things down to only your favorites.

Yes I did have an amount of $100, but that's hard when the smallest pkg. is $120. That's where the christmas gift thing comes in. And that I haven't given out pictures of my kids for 3 years. My husband and I will have to make a decision.

i think too much means different for every single person .. for ex. the poor person will see too much as like 1000 $ or little more . but the rich or the regular person will see that its like 1 million or more !!!

Some of these photo studios or photographers can be very pricey. I am always talked into these things and when I get my daughters photos I want to buy them all. I cannot leave any out. As you can use these for presents I would go ahead with buying them. If it was any other time of the year I would tell you just to buy one and check out the cheapest ones next time. I know it was for a fundraiser, but we can take some really good pictures ourselves these days and get them enlarged too. Well I hope you make the right decision. Take care.

I do normally take photos myself the past several years. And now that I have a digital camera I like, I just need to get better at using the features on the camera. I need to take some close ups of the boys right now for our christmas card. I should've done it yesterday because today at lunch my 3 yr old fell and cut his lip really good in several places. Thankfully I should be able to fix it if I have to in photoshop elements.

Sorry about your little boys lip. Yes you can fix it in Photoshop. I usually leave that up to the hubby to fix them for me. Take care and I hope your sons lip heals quickly. Take care.

Thats a lot of money. There are many other places that don't cost that much. Your not being stingy. My church had a new photo directory made, we all got a free book and an 8x10 pic free. Then they let us know how much the other pics would cost. I didn't buy any of them. It was $25 just for a 5x7 plus tax and whatever other hidden fees they have. Too expensive for me.

I can say no to stuff like that, but my husband won't and it kind of upsets me because I have other things I'd rather be spending that money on. But he wants to nice.

I don't like getting my kids pictures taken without knowing the prices first. We had them taken in Church and it was the same thing. It was way too expensive, so we decided to not get any. Late we went to WAlmart and got a huge package for like $10! I know that Sears also has great deals. I wouldn't spend that much on photos when you can go other places and they do just as nice of a job.

I know, I hate those church photos. Its about $100 minimum. And last time I really didn't like them. But I'll put them in the boys' scrapbooks.

You know, that is quite in line with what is out there..... provided they are good pictures. You can find much cheaper, but the quality shows. It is a great idea for adult Christmas gifts. I think for that price you should also receive a disc with all the shots from the photo shoot on it.

I'll have to ask, but I don't think this co. offers a CD with the package. I know they will be good photos. that's why I don't bother going to walmart anymore. I mean...I can do that well and sometimes I get to amazing shots on my own.

I think it is ridiculous what they charge for professional photos, OK they are lovely to have but I cannot afford the prices they charge. My two boys have their photos taken in their school each september and they are taken of them together. What I did this time was buy one copy for us and then I scanned the other and put it on my computer and then I had some printed off from an online photo place for just a few pence each. I can also buy them at a bigger size framed or get it blown up into a full size poster works out much cheaper for us and it is still a lovely picture to have of our children.

I didn't know getting their photos taken together at school was an option? That's a great idea if they'll let you do it? I may have to ask next time.

If that knocks out the adult Christmas gifts go for it because other wise you'll probably spend more on different gifts. But yes tis the season for things to go up in price.

Yes, I think my husband and I will have to talk about this one more time. My sister said the same thing too.

Ouch. Hope they were some goood photos. I couldn't pay that much. I go to Walmart or Kmart. I once had Glamour shots done and they were outragious & I think I would of looked better had I done my own hair & makeup. I don't think you are being stingy at all.

Oh, I hate getting professional pictures taken, they tell you its free, like you get a free 8x10, but then here they come with all the different packages, and you can't resist buying more pictures for the whole family, they know how to get to you... One time our church was making a church directory, where each family had to get a picture taken, and it was free, the first 8x10 was anyway, the one they were going to put in the directory was the free one, but then you could pick different poses, but of course those weren't free. Well my husband and I kept the free 8x10 because we didn't have any pictures of ourselves, but I at least wanted to get one for both our mothers. Well we picked two 5x7's, and when it was time to pay it came out to about 60.00. I couldn't believe they were charging us 60.00 for two pictures. My husband was livid, but he didn't say anything about it till we got in the car...lol. The pictures did turn out good tho, and our mothers loved them.

I have a similar vent about portraits myself. The school photos. They are so insanely priced that I haven't bought school portrait photos at all, not once. I have three kids in school and at about 120 a piece for the package that's just way too much money to put out on school portrait photos. 360 dollars is better spent on their needs than a set of photos in my opinion. I have a fairly decent connection to a professional photographer that has yearly packages for about the same price as the school photos and I can chose when I want to use her services up to 3 to 4 times for the year for the same price as buying three of the portrait packages from the school. I can do beginning of school year photos, Christmas photos and Easter photos in one year for the same price and get 3 times my the worth of my money. I suggest finding a private professional photographer that deals in child portraits that has a similar package for yearly sessions or multiple sessions a year for one price packaging. It's a touch more expensive but you get more out of it than you would Sears or Walmart would give you.

Wow, I've never heard of a photographer offering that kind of package like you described. Sounds like a great idea for the parents. I can't believe your lowest school package is $120, that is insane. Fortunately I can get by with $9 - $25 in that area. You can spend a lot more of course...and I may change my ways when both the boys are in school. Thanks for posting!

I just had my sons senior pictures professionally taken and this is what the package consisted of: 3-8X10 12-5X7 50- wallet size 25- exchange size And 2 frames for the 8X10's The total for this package was $116.00. If you're happy with the price and it will cover most adult christmas gifts then go for it!

We go to the Sears Portrait Studios. It's pretty reasonable (probably half the cost of what you're talking about). Until the end of the year, they are having a promotion on their SmileSavers, which gives you a free sitting fee and free 8X10 every time you come in. They're always having promotions and coupons too (Just got a package of my daughter's pictures for $5!) They do quality work and I always get the CD (which is a bit pricy at $120, but very convenient). To make the CD worth it, I make them do a LOT of enhancements and special things to the pictures on the CD. I did the MOPS thing to. Just paid the $10 for the coupon thing but never used it. Happy MyLotting!

Thanks for sharing. I know Sears does a good job. But I'd have to drive an hour and a half (one way) to do that. So it's kind of a toss up for me.

That seems to be alot of money for pictures! I have had professional pictures taken at the PicturMe Studios and Olan Mills and they did not come anywhere near that price! Not only that at PictureMe the girl threw in a free 8x10 of my husband and I! I think the total cost of out package was like 85 bucks, but never anywhere near 180! That is just outrageous! I know the package that we got though did come with 3 5x7, an 8x10, a boatload of wallets. (We ran out of fmaily members to give them to that many)! So I would check there next time you get your kids pictures taken.

I think my sister-in-law went there (or a place similar) because don't you walk out with the pictures that day? That's the kind of place I would look at since I have to drive 1 1/2 hours to get there. She said they were reasonable in price as well. I probably wouldn't have gotten the boys pictures taken this time, but it's for my mops group and I'm on the organizational team so I need to participate in this stuff.
