Yesterday I attended the wake of my 12 & 13 year old son's great grandmother. Now I went to view her for the last time and really didn't see the glasses she was wearing. I always had a problem going to wakes and funerals so I tend not to stare too much. Well anyway, while out in the lobby with my mom, she brought up the fact that Sister V, as she was so lovingly known as, was wearing glasses and she asked why do people put glasses on the dead? Do you know the answer?

I think it is because it is at least comforting, same as we dress our deceased in their favorite clothes. I think it is a comfort thing, to see the person as we remember them. Another thing is, some may think that they are really needed depending on how they believe.

Well, I would say because people want to remember their deceased loved ones the way they looked when they were alive and well. This, however, is not common in all cultures. In mine for instance, when people pass away, they are buried stripped off their belongings. But I personally think it is ok and very much understandable to do so.

Hi, I think they do it to respect the families wishes, so if the glasses were requested by the family to be put on then the undertakers do as requested.

I have seen this before and I think it is what the family prefers. Sometimes they feel like since the deceased wore glasses they might look more natural with them on. Obviously there is no logical reason but I guess if the family is satisfied that is what matters.

If the person wore glasses while living, that's just the way family members are used to seeing them I guess. Happy MyLotting!
