Today television shows are full of profanity and violence. What television shows are good for children? Even whenever we monitor what they watch, when they are in bed the sound is still heard. Kids are very observant and sensitive to sound and action... What do we do as parents? Not watch the shows ourselves?

Yeah and when they are asleep is when they absorb the sounds more and it filters into their brains subconsciously and that isn't good. Remember how they say if you want your child to do better in school let them listen to Mozart,Bach and others while they were asleep? Or let them listen to learning tapes/CD's because their mind absorbs while they are asleep well their subconscious does so you know that hearing cursing, battles, and others sounds can be as bad as almost watching it. I guess the best thing would be to look at your T.V.'s Parental controls and block out what children aren't allowed to watch and when you yourself have it on lower the volume or use headphones. I do this when my husband is asleep as not to bother him.

For me the best tv shows that children should watch, are the disney shows, educational programs and dvd's that helps them to developed them mentally. Tv programs too about animals and nature would be good too for thier environmental awareness. Happy posting.

It depends on you're children's age. Like my son is young and he likes the Disney channel,PBS kids Sprout,OETA & the Qubo channel. When he was a tot I only let him watch DVD's like "The Wiggles" and educational kid dvd's like that. I know one for sure way to take control of what you're kids watch, only let them view mom approved DVD's so you know what they are watching all the time and set the parental control on the family T.V. . We have 3 T.V.s in our household and in my son's room he does not have digital cable t.v. in his room, only a digital converter box for local T.V stations and he only watches Qubo ( kids channel) on his T.V., but he basiclly watches VHS & dvd's in his room ( Mom approved dvd's and VHS tapes) but if he wants to watch digital cable t.v. in the living room he watches the shows I mentioned above. Even though not as many people watch VHS tapes anymore, I think it's good to have a VHS player for kids because it's cheap to buy great kids shows on VHS tapes, I often buy them at thrift stores for my son and he loves them . And all of the tapes I buy for him are educational. By doing this you will have greater control over what you're kids watch.

Educational DVD's that you control would guarantee the content is not profane or such. Perhaps Thomas the tank engine, Barney, Sesame Street, Super Why, etc. Along those lines, PBS is a great station, though I don't know if they run kids shows at night, I'm pretty sure they don't. I agree that television is very important in influencing kids, and even moreso when they are young. I technically learned most of my english watching TV. Just make sure they value other things besides TV growing up though, like going outside, excercise, etc.
