How do you know you have termites?

There are links to other articles about them as well. I knew our house had them when we bought it after we tore up the front cements steps to add a patio deck. Powdery wood by the door (if it's wooden) or any similar signs. And at night, you might hear a soft tuk-tuk-tuk sound, then that means something going on in the walls/ceilings of your bedroom - this was the experience of my parents. They thought it was something from the neighbors but when they noticed how frequent it is, they decided to have someone take a look at the ceiling and they actually did discover termites.
