Whats wrong with our schools

I live in West Texas and all that people in our schools seem to care about is football. I know first hand when I was in high school how bad it truly is. All the football players are allowed to do what they want. Most of them DO fail but are given passing grades anyways. I still keep in touch with one of my old English teachers and she says that they are actually pushed into doing that. While I was in high school I was actually suspended from school for writing an editorial in our school paper about this very subject. During that time the school had the second lowest GPA in Texas but instead of doing anything to fix it they fired the old football coach and hired a new one. Flew him in, Found him a house, and threw a huge city wide reception for him. Total cost? 22k. Now since I'm not there they have done the same thing with two more coaches and still have a horrible GPA and now one of the highest drop out rates. What should be done? It just isn't right putting all the kids through that allowing the football players to graduate without an education and the kids who really try to be allowed to drop out due to a poor system. Is anybody else experiencing this? I'm sure it cant just be Texas

Did you know the budget for the sports teams at Florida U is 7 times as much as the budget for the english department..sad. College sports are really deep and invovle a ton of money, bribes, and special treatment. its pretty bad.

I'm just worried there is nothing that can be done. If one day I have children I am starting to wonder if home school or private school may be the best thing. I just wouldn't want to deprive them becoming social or have them be shy because of it. Not to mention what if they do go to public school and decide they want to play football. I don't want them to be able to take the free ride they receive by doing it. What do you think would be best?
