I understand tofu is a word translated from Chinese or Japanese. At first, I thought bean curd is the word for it, but I heard many people call it tofu. So, I'm wondering which one I should call it. What do you call it? tofu or bean curd?

Neither. In my country it is called 'tahu'. It similar to tofu. About 'bean curd', I've never heard about it. I think we use tofu better because that soy-food comes from Japan. Chinese call it tou hu if I'm not mistaken.

Hi Mirsya, thanks for your response. Well, Chinese actually call it "dou fu" in Mandarin.

when i was growing up my mom calls it tokwa. maybe those chinese people are the one who calls that. but during my college years i slowly hear on tv the culinary experts calls it tofu. and i think it is more popularly known as tofu than what i can remember of tokwa. even in restaurants here it is more popularly called as tofu and not bean curd.

Hi se7enthbird, thanks for your response. I've no idea what tokwa is, though I'm Chinese. Perhaps it's different dialect. Now only I know tofu is a more common used term.

Hi akangirl, thanks for your response. So, I should call it tofu when I talk to others... I always thought bean curd is a more formal term.
