Do you want your children have more homework?

Actually my child is in the age of kindergarten only. I have heard that some parents complained about the teacher as she didn't give "a lot" of homework to the children. I think the teacher is good. I don't agree to give many homework to the children, especially they are so little now. The teacher let them write some numbers everyday and I think it's good enough.

I was a kindergarten teacher till a few months back and I don't think kindergarten kids need to be given any homework till they are in the last year of kindergarten...and that too just once a week. With kids growing up so soon, I'd want them to be kids as long as possible without being burdened with the pressure of homework....and making learning sound like a chore or 'work'. But I've seen parents who complain about a 2 year old not being 'taught' the alphabets and 3 year olds not being able to 'write'!

REsearch has shown that earlier pressure on little kids (even when they manage to do the required work) might result in burnout.

I like a teacher like you because I also disagree to give heavy study pressure to children, especially the little children.

I think homework is needed. So giving them some homework can help them master the knowlege well. While still should keep them have soem free time to do what they are interested in. If they do not have homework, we should give the more, while if they do not have time to enjoy the free time, we should make them have less.

I think here the homework is just so much. I experienced it when I was little. So I don't want it's the same for the children today.

When I was a student, I have never spent too much time on my homework, though my school has been considered to be the one with the most homework in my city. I still can finish it in the school, while with no more work too do to the home. So after school, I can do many things I like. Some of my classmates can not finish the homework until ten in the night. I think to student, if they can understand what teachers taught in the class well, they do not need to spend too much time on their homework.

I don't have kids but I do remember highschool.Too much homework isn't good. When I was in highschool, I had homework from 6 different classes plus I had to practice violin. Less homework is a good thing. I had a algebra teacher who gave us just a few problems each night for homework. Just enough to see if we learned that day's lessen. it was just the right amount of homework. I don't see how the amount of homework tells parents. If you have learned the lesson then why would you need to do 20-50 problems. And if you didn't learn the lesson, 20-50 problems won't make you you learn it faster. In fact it may frustrate you.

Homework in Kindergarten? I don't remember I have a lot of homework when I was in kindergarten. The only reason why the teacher gave homework is to ensure my mum go thru it with me and be involved in my learning process. They are kids. And they are only young once. Why load them now? There will be plenty of homework once they start primary school. Sigh... parents now a days are so kiasu (scared to lose).

This is true. Parents don't want their children to lose at the beginning. Then perhaps they think doing more homework is helpful. I think few people can be successful at last. Most people are normal. So it's not bad that to be normal but have a happy life.

Hello youless. For a child at a kindergarten, it is better not to have so much homework, but for a student at a high school, either junior or senior, it is good for the teachers to assign some moderate homework as consolidation for what they have learned during the day. You know, not all of the students are self-discipline. If they have no homework to do after school, they will just play without reading. So moderate homework is good enough to help them spend their time more wisely and effectively in their outside class reading. Good day.

I wonder how much homework you give to your student

I give mine moderate homework as they have so many other subjects to learn. I never give them too much, just moderate for them to have some time to do other exercises and some time to play. As you know, all work, no play makes Jack a dull boy. Thank you for your response.

I think children need homework even at an early age, it teaches responsibility. I also think parents should sit down with there children and help with the learning and teaching of subjects in school. I dont have small children they are teens and they have homework about once a week I feel that there education is not the way it should be, at this point I have taught them at home more than the teachers have taught them in school and yet we are told that are teachers are not getting paid enough.

Perhaps we have different opinions. I think the children should finish the homework by themselves willingly. If parents sit down with them and the children will depend on them. I don't think it's a good idea.

youless, i agree with you. children should not get homework from the very early age. if they are given at a later stage it must not be heavy for the children. if the volume of homesork is such that the child cannot complete it within the time or she remains busy whole day doing homework and finds no time to play or relax, the child will lose interest in study and will harm the child in the long run.

I am ok with my kids having homework, not too much though since their attention span is not that long and they easily get tired of doing their homework. I think that too much homework should be avoided so that the kids will not dislike doing their homework, since too much time doing their homework may take away their nap time or playtime. The kids might not enjoy it anymore and when they grow up they might develop the attitude of not wanting to do homeworks.

hi youless, in my opinion kindergarten or the younger students like your child... the teacher gives them a lot of homeworks for they want to know if the parents are supporting the students or if the parents are guiding their children. for me that is how i look at that. there are a lot of parents out there who works so hard that they no longer have time to give their children time. that is how i see that. i have four children and they are all teens..... now that they are in the higher level they no longer have tons and tons of homework like before.

I think the amount of homework a child should have varies with each child. SOme dont need alot. Others need as much as they can get to help them process the whole theory. For my daughter, I think she could use more homework. I think she is not doing her best at this time. SHe is in the 8th grade now and her life is changing. I am trying to be supportive of her. She seems to have hit the teenage moody stage. I think she has slid backwards a little. As I remember, I did the same thing for a few then I went right back to doing my best. In junior high you are trying to prove youre cool. That's the most important thing. Kids can be cruel. I do know that to be fact. I am trying to give her the space she needs. I think right now since she is trying, more homework would be a good thing. Thanks dl

I think we suffered the heavy study pressure when we were in school. So I don't want the same thing happen to my child. Life can be quite boring if there is only homework.

I am an education major and I feel that students need some homework in order to reinforce what they are learning. In Kindergarten I feel that the child needs to learn how to read and I have seen it where children do not know how to. When I was in school I remember getting some homework. I remember we had some coloring, some real basic math and a couple of pages of reading. These are basic skills that are necessary as they are the foundation for learning.

My son also is studying in the kinder garden, as you said, he is doing 2 to 3 hours daily written works. we (myself and wife) work with him daily in order to complete his home work. I am also feel that this is too much at this age. Due to school standards, i am not able to do anything with school teachers. Simply we follow the teacher's guide. During exam times, we noticed that the study hours still becomes more, he used to escape from his study.

You are a good parent.I don't agree that children need to have lots of homework.children need a a wonderful childhood.so they need enough extra time to do anything they like.painting, play games with friend, camping, hiking.so many things.when they grow up they have a perfect childhood to recall.

IF parents think their child does not have enough homework then they should take the time and responsiblitly of buying grade appropriate work books and sit and work with them. You are right that kindergarten should not send too much homework. The children are learning social skills as well as letters and numbers at this grade level. I bought my granddaughter age appropriate workbooks and she loved them. Coloring and writing numbers and letters and learning without even knowing it. They sell them at Wal-mart and Dollar Stores.

hello youless, I guess as a mother, it's just okey to have my children have a lot of homework for as long as it's not everyday. For they need also to study for their other lessons and need also a break. Indeed, they will learn to be responsible from doing it and they will get used to it as they will go to higher year. But in your case, since your child is still in kindergarten I think they should not have a lot of homework yet for he is still beginner. And beginners should enjoy everything what they are doing for now so they will be inspired in going to school everyday.

I think a suitable homework can also let a children to learn to be responsible. You know the quantity isn't a big problem, the quality is the point.

Nowadays the kids are really overburdened with books and homework. Just imagine, some kids from kindergarten even go for tuition. The more ambitious parents would enroll their children for painting, music, language classes - I think it's crazy. Kids at that young an age, should at least have time to play, and be kids!

if a parent thinks a teacher don't give enough homework that is where the parent should step in and do some educational activties with the child. it's not only the teacher responsilty to teach the parent has to help.
