Antibacterial Soap Making Us Sick?

United States

Again with the medical shows...I love 'em. On The Doctors, they said that antibacterial soap is the leading culprit of people getting illnesses that used to be rare because it kills the bacteria before our bodies have a chance to build an immunity. My family uses antibacterial handsoap because our school system has had soooo many cases of MRSA and I don't want my kids to get it. I also send hand sanitizer to school with them and they clean their' desks with it. So where is the middle ground here? Do we stop using antibacterial soap and run the risk of getting sick or do we run the risk of getting sick by using it too much?

It is an effective way to get rid of germs but I guess that by getting rid of them and not allowing our bodies to build an immunity to those germs, we are getting sicker. I'm not going to stop using antibacterial soap and hand sanitizer though because MRSA is in our schools and I don't want my kids to get it. But I don't want them getting something else because they couldn't build an immunity either.

Well this is the first time I heard about it and it opened up myself to things that maybe true about them. I guess in our body there are good and bad bacteria that exist in our body. With this antibacterial soaps and sanitizers it is really possible that we kill the good bacteria that helps our body from being more vulnerable as we could not always sanitize our environment. Where is the middle ground in here. I guess moderation is the answer to everything. Cleaning our bodies does not need daily antibacterial soap. We just need to use regular soap perhaps most of the harmful ones are already removed by it.

It makes it really hard to know what to do when there are so many diseases in the schools.
