What Does It Mean?

United States
November 20, 2008 10:26am CST
I was just sitting in another discussion looking at a word I used. What the heck is a somehow? Then instead of trying to figure that out, I got sidetracked and started thinking about other words that just sound odd, IF you think about them when you say them. Ever jimmied a window or a door? Why is it called jimmy? That's someone's name, not an action! And, of course, as soon as I started writing this, all the other things that were running around in my mind decided to head for the corners and hide. (Hmmm, if my mind has corners, does that mean I have a square head?) So, I want to know, are there words or phrases that you use that make you stop and go, "Hmmmm, wonder where that came from and what does it even mean?"? Or is it just me?

I've asked this numerous times and no one has ever enlightened me as to where did such question originate: Are you off your rocker?

What's a panda spanker and do they like it? Over here we say "jemmy". This is a pure guess, but I should think that it has something to do with an English king called James. James no doubt "forced" something. Either that or someone called Jem or Jim was a burglar and devised the thing. There are many words that I wonder about. "Gordon Bennett" (an exclamation), Trencherman (A trencher was a bread plate that people ate their food off). Presumably a trencherman either ate all his food, or ate the plate as well!

Yeah, I have often wondered about stuff like that, too. Makes no sense to me why one rule doesn't work for all words.

I was a little concerned about HOW you were going to help, until I saw that you really can't. *Wipes forehead and lets out a sigh of relief.* I have seen your brand of "help"!

Don't you love how people come along and comment on old, defunct discussions? It's you... No, it's not really you but I can't think of one right now. But every so often I go to spell a word and it just doesn't look right even though it is.

Pffffttttt! I am always reviving someone's old discussion. I miss them for one reason or another when they first go up, then I find them months later and answer it anyway. I do that with words, too. And, mylot doesn't recognize some words, and when I type them out, it gets a little red line under it. I go to the dictionary to check it out, and it's right. Talk about confusing!

Hey bo! Nope! You are so not alone! Sometimes I think that I am going crazy when I stop to think about stuff like that and I'm all alone and my mind starts to wander and my brain fills up with all sorts of weird questions that I don't know where to get answers from! It is true that there are so many words that we use that if we actually take the time to stop and think about them, then they do not make any sense at all and we can wonder forever where did they come from! My mother makes up her own words! Maybe she has the right idea! At least she knows where they came from and what they mean! She made is the one that made them up at least?!

hi bohemianheart my dad had one he always used when he was upset about something. oh for the love of Pete, now who the 'heck was Pete and whats with the love of, a nd my hubby and his saying, as sure as God made little green apples, we should not do such and such, what does that have to do with doing or not doing something? Thats the way the ball rolls, or as sure as a cookie crumbles, what has that to do with how things are? Or my mom yelling quit fiddle faddleing around and just do it? She meant quit stalling and do what I asked, so why not just say that? Or she has a screw loose, why not just say she is not all there mentally? Or he only has one oar in the water. give me a break.again my hubby talking about being depressed,I am having a black friday. why Friday,,is that worse for being depressed on than say Mon or tues or wed? or he tossed his cookies, meaning he vomited? what has that to do with throwing cookies?

English is a strange language. Every now and the new words are being added to Webster's to stay in tuned to the life today. People are making up new words left and right.

Yes, jordan, it is a strange language. The really bad thing is when it is your first language and you don't understand it. *L*
