In March 1966 in an interview John Lennon said that The Beatles are more known / famous than Jesus and that I quote "Christianity will disappear". That started a series of protests and did upset the Church. After 42 years, the Roman-Catholic Church forgives John Lennon for that statement that caused a series of protests from the Catholics. What do you think about that? As for me, I did not know of such statements until recently browsing on the internet.

I do remember the comment at the time it happened and the furor over it. I mean he apologized soon afterwards but nobody seems to want to remember the apology. It should have been forgiven and forgotten right there. BUT NOOOOOOO! It got blown so far out of proportion and went straight to absurb. There were boycotts of radio stations and record burnings in parking lots.. it was so stupid. Even as conservative of a Christian as my mother was at the time she didn't even think twice about it after the apology. The only good side was it only added to the Beatles popularity. Like I said in the post above, wanna become popular?.. tick off the conservative Christians!

I remember that, and the ridiculous reaction. It was an off-hand remark made by a whitty smart mouth kid who was exhausted, full of amphetamines and under extraordinarily stressful circumstances. Then reported completely out of context. He did apologized for the comment shortly after he made it. It should have been left alone and should never have been thought of as anything more than it was. But even after his apology it was blown way WAY out of proportion by conservative Christians (not very forgiving of them) which resulted in the Beatles being boosted into a category of popularity that celebrities today could only dream about. Valuable lesson learned, wanna be popular.. tick off the conservative Christians! Mighty big *sarcasm* of the Vatican to do that when he apologized 42 yrs ago.

Hi, and thanks for your answer. You are right, the press, mass-media always exploited even the tiniest remarks, not to mention the big goofs like this one, to make only scandalous news. As I noticed you are in a band. That's great! Good luck with it.
