With all the crime in the world and the sudden increase of gun sales, I started thinking about home security. We don’t really have any. We used to keep a ball bat by the door but it’s gone. I also used to have my dog, Petey, but he’s passed away. We don’t have a gun (I really don’t like them), a bat, a taser, a vicious dog or even an alarm system. If I had to get something I’d probably get a bat. If I’m scared enough and mad enough I know I could swing to kill or at least cripple someone. Luckily we live in an area where there isn’t much crime so far as break-ins. What kind of home security do you have? Which one do you think is the most affective? Is it necessary where you live? we don't have any home security and we don't even lock our doors, montreal over all is a very safe city and I am glad that I live in Canada, wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

We have an alarm and it is a great deterrent. A thief just sees the siren on the wall and doesn't bother. We used to have a large dog (German Shepherd) and he was a great deterrent as he would bark and snarl at any body trying to come into the house at night. I wouldn't use a weapon of any sort as the burglar may have a better weapon or I would hurt the burglar and be arrested myself.

I think a dogs bark is really all that any burglar needs to hear and they'll go elsewhere.

We have an alarm system and I've had it since I was broken into in the mid-1990's. We use it when we are away from the house. My mom got it a bit before I did when the then vacant house next to hers was found to have a transient living in it. Since she lived alone, she set it when she was in for the night as well.

I'm surrounded by angels, so don't need any "home security". I do have a baseball bat that I found in my last house, but I just use it to bang on the ceiling when the non-paying guests (critters) get too rowdy up there.

I have a Marine for a security feature in my home. I don't have anything either except him. I'd love to have an alarm system but can't afford it. I'd love to have a big dog but my house is too small and my rent would go up any we can't afford that either.

We also do not have any formal security system but I do feel safe at night. I feel like my house is pretty well locked up. I lock my bedroom door when i go to bed and keep my cell phone right by me. I don't think I'd attack anyone, I'd more likely think of an escape plan and be calling 911 on the way out! We do have motion lights around the house and those I think help b/c if I see it go on, I peek outside. It's usually just a cat, but it's nice to know the light will alert me that someone MIGHT be out there. Our backyard and front stays well lit b/c we live under a street light AND my neighbors all have lights on all night out back, so even when my motion light isn't on, no one can hide in my yard, I can see it all :)

Our windows are double-paned and our doors are HELL to get open (they're trick doors xD). Also: I own a few swords and several knives. Most thieves and would-be criminals are terribly frightened of the unexpected. A lady suddenly popping up and swinging at your head with a sword should get 'em to go runnin', I think. Unfortunately, I can't afford an alarm system and my poor dog's old and outside anyways. Heaven forbid they run into my Mom in the dark of night, though. She's one dangerous lady.

I know that crime is rampant in this world today but I am just glad that nothing untoward has happened to us in the past year. There was one incident though when I was away and someone tried to break into our house. That was a scary thing for my family and I cut short my trip and went back home pronto.

Hi twoey, in my area it would be very advisable to have home security but I haven't..its just so expensive, my dogs would let me know if there was an intruder and hopefully there barks would warn them off...I am not sure what kind of home security there is nowadays especially that is cheap..if money was no object though I would get one that went straight through to the police, so at the moment I will stick with my dogs...also here in the UK if you attack or harm an intruder it is you who get done NOT the intruder...can you make sense of that??? hugs littleowl

We do not have a lot of crime where we live either but I would not take any chances! We have no security to speak of and my one fear is of someone breaking in and the bigger fear is that they will break in while I am in the house. I keep all the doors locked all the time but if someone wants to get in then they will I just hope that it never happens it is a really scary thought.

Luckily we live in a place that is guarded by security guards 24/7 we never had experience a break-in or anything but in our place burglary and theft happens in a way that the owners are usually swindled. Good thing our house isn't that big and it doesn't attract attention to these evil minds.

We have no home security at all only our locked doors which isn't much since I am sure one hard kick would open the door. So far it hasn't been necessary but we have my husbands family that live on both sides so no one will mess with it unless it is them.

We do not live in that sort of area thankfully. Yes there is some theft and that is mainly young kids who roam around together looking for things that they can steal. But we do have a dog who gets rather noisy if someone enters the property and particularly if I am not home. She is a labrador and appears as gentle as a lamb but is very protective of my partner. We live on the ooutskirts of the town and our nearest neighboirs are a bit of a distance away but it is almost impossible to get to our place without going past theirs. So they are very aware of the traffic that goes to our place and also they are aware that I am often away. Yes our place can be reached but it means going down some pretty rough tracks which would put all but the most determined off. At night we always shut the gates as well. One cannot be opened unless the chain is cut and the other makes an unholy noise when it is opened. My partner will not let me fix it either as she says that way she gets a warning if someone is coming into our property. lol She also has a baseball bat near the door from the days before we met and she lived alone with her children. She has a pretty mean swing too so I suspect anyone trying to get into the home would be very sore by the time she was finished with them. lol

Our home security is our noisy neighbors, the vicious feral cat next door, the killer rabbit, an ax and saw downstairs, kitchen knives, a rolling pin, oh and a scarf whereby I can either trip or strangle the nefarious brute. We used to have a dog, but she was the kind who welcomed strangers and if she could talk would tell the creep where we hid the family jewels.

My home was broken into 2 years ago. So I always have household safety in the back of my mind now. We have a home security system. Which is most helpful at night. But we have a dog now. And she seems to be the most effective. Plus she is a wonderful addition to our family.
