Suggestions for a healthy breakfast?

I'm starting a simple program of loing weight and living a healthy lifestyle. In most of my readings, it is highly recommended to start your day with a good breakfast. Now, there are many unhealthy options for breakfast unfortunately, from calore-ridden pancakes, bagels, sugar-filled cereals, etc, that I'm trying to put together a list of healthy breakfast items. Right now, my regular staple is 100% whole wheat toast with peanut butter, eggbeaters and a piece of fruit. How about you? What do you usually eat for breakfast? Do you consider them healthy or if you have a choice, would you rather eat something else?

Don't have a breakfast, you will remain healthy without extra calories in the morning :)

Actually, it is not good for the body to start the day without giving it fuel. Breakfast is the most important meal. It is just hard to find the best kinds of breakfast. We have too many "new" ideas that you need cereals or eggs or such as that for breakfast. Think about it. Cereals didn't even exist until the technology to process foods was invented. The highest calorie meals should be at breakfast, tapering off to lower calories in the evening. I think most of us have a problem with this because we make our evenings last too long and we get hungry again. People used to go to bed with the sun and wake with the sun so they didn't get hungry in the later part of the evenings. Thanks for your topic. I have been working on improving my health as well and have gone back to eating breakfast in the mornings after years without it. It isn't easy to find things I can have that are quick and easy since I am one of those who wakes up with just minutes available before I start my day's work.

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It gives us all the energy we need to kick start the day and keep us going. According to research, skipping meals, especially our breakfast, can actually make weight control more difficult. Breakfast skippers tend to eat more food than usual at the next meal or nibble on high-calorie snacks to stave off hunger. Several studies suggest that people tend to accumulate more body fat when they eat fewer, larger meals than when they eat the same number of calories in smaller, more frequent meals. Below are some healthy breakfast ideas for you to try: One serving of whole grain cereal like Cheerios or Wheaties with one-half cup non-fat milk, one teaspoon sugar, one hard-boiled egg with a glass of water. 270 calories. One slice of whole grain toast with two tablespoons peanut butter with a 10-ounce glass of non-fat milk. 375 calories Try an Omelet made with two eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, green onions, peppers and one ounce of shredded cheese with an apple and a glass of water. 410 calories. If you would like something sweet for a change, add fresh berries to your cereal, or sugar free fruit-only spreads to your toast. I have 2 slices of wholemeal bread toasted with sardines on top for my breakfast. This is not only good for you, but it sustains me all morning long. They say having five portions of fruit a day is important, well try a few at breakfast. Try 1 slice gala or honeydew melon, chopped into chunks 1 banana, apple or pear, chopped into chunks 50g Kellogg's 'Just right', Jordan's Original, or another favourite cereal 2 tablespoons natural bio yoghurt. Combine all the ingredients together and enjoy. You can have this also from time to time: Lean meat choices (serve with eggs or whole grain bread): *canadian bacon *turkey bacon *turkey or chicken sausage *pork tenderloin Well I hope this might give you a few different things to try for your breakfast that are healthy for you.

I like to have french toast with strawberries and bananas on top. There isn't anything wrong with pancakes depends on what you put on them. I can't eat peanut butter, so it would never be on my list. You might consider oatmeal, which is quite healthy. I get bored eating the same thing each day, so like a few options. I'm trying to eat better also.

Pancakes and french toasts are too-carb laden for me in the morning, but I would like to indulge and have them on certain days. Thanks for sharing!

I used to have a roommate in college who made upma a lot. I once had the recipe. Could you share yours with me? Maybe it is like hers. I loved her upma.

Oatmeal, flaxseed, blueberries & almonds. To me, this is the perfect breakfast. Steel-cut oatmeal is probably the healthier choice, but if you are in a hurry, the instant kind will do fine (it doesn’t have as much fiber, but the other ingredients make up for that). After microwaving the oatmeal, add ground flaxseed, frozen blueberries, sliced almonds. You can add a little cinnamon and honey (not a lot) if you’re using the non-instant oatmeal. That’s four power foods, full of fiber and nutrients and protein and good fats, with only a couple of minutes of prep time. And very tasty!

Ground flaxseed is good for the heart as it has omega oils in it. It is also packed with fiber. However do not use too much as it has a laxative effect unless that is why you are using it. Using ground flaxseed is a healthy and natural way to keep you regular. Do not buy flaxseed pre ground as it goes rancid when exposed to air. You should grind it yourself. This can be done in an electric coffee grinder. You can grind two or three days worth at a time but seal it in a plastic bag in the freezer to prevent deterioration. Flaxseed is a cheap and healthy addition to your morning cereal and adds some flavour to the cereal too.

I'm not a big breakfast person but when I do eat breakfast it's usually scrambled eggs, wheat toast, and sausage or biscuits and gravy. If I just want something small to tide me over 'til lunch I either eat a couple of pieces of toast or some mini blueberry muffins. It would probably be more healthy to eat the things you mentioned but given a choice I think rather go the biscuit and gravy rout.

I usually have some instant oatmeal with a sugar free coffee for a drink. In the summer when its hot, I'll usually eat a piece of fruit or a protein bar, as I like the energy I get from eating protein early in the morning. What you are eating is good as it has a good combination of carbs and proteins which is the proper way to start a healthy eating regimine. Although every now and then, I will go out for pancakes, just don't make it a habit.

When I am dieting I like to eat a cup of cottage cheese and half a can of pineapple or peaches. If I am really hungery I will eat the whole can of pineapple, but that is not a lot of calories and no fat so I don't feel bad about it. Also when dieting I will make an omelet using 2 egg whites and 1 full egg, and I will put veggies and just a little cheese in it. I loke spinach, onion, green pepper, and broccoli, what ever is left over or is on hand goes in to my omelet.

Fruit is always good since it has natural sugars that your body can store and turn into energy when you need it. Sounds like you've got a plan to start eating healthy and starting your day out good. Good luck.

Eating something sugary for breakfast helps to jump start your metabolism. That's why most breakfast foods are sugary: cereal, pancakes (syrup), etc. But as you know, sugar isn't very healthy. That's why fruit is the best way to go. Fruit has natural sugars in it that are good for you. Grapefruits, pomegranites, oranges, apples...yummmmm,yumm,yummmm.

I always eat a ood breakfast. What I eat varies from day to day. Some time I'll have oatmeal with some dried fruit in it. some days it's Kasha cereal with apple sauce for moisture. or eat it fry. Then I fix whole wheat sourdough pancakes for my self and the kids. We put peanut butter with a little syrup on them. Some time it's toast and eggs. I have pretty much gotten away from processed cereals. We also do bisuits and gravy. When eating a good harty breakfast you'll find your not quit as hungry come lunch then supper. You alos won't need that mid morning snack. Supper should be really light because you not as active in the eveing and during the night so your body won't use up those calories. Thhere is a saying to eat like a king in the morning like a prince at lunch and a pauper for supper.

Oatmeal is a good choice. A bowl of oatmeal and your regualr whole wheat toast sounds like a good idea. I get the weight smart kind of oatmeal, so it only has 1g of sugar. But it tastes so good! And they have many different flavors. But even if you can't find weight control oatmeal, it is still a good source of protein and fiber.

I make old fashioned oatmeal and usually add a teaspoon of sugar and about a half cup skim milk before I eat it. It's filling and good, plus it supposedly helps lower cholesterol. Sometimes, I put a small box of raisins in it. I eat it probably 4 mornings a week. I also like a lowfat or fat free yogurt with either fresh strawberries or a cut up apple or pear with it. If I'm really hungry, I'll even add a half serving of high fiber and low sugar cereal (Kashi, Special K, or Smart Start). I also will have toast with peanut butter and a glass of milk with a fruit or fruit juice. Those are pretty much my "staple" breakfasts at home. Good luck with your program, wayz12.

For my breakfast i tend to take about 1/2 a cup of French vanilla yogurt, a cup orange juice, a banana, and a handful of frozen berries (strawberries raspberries blueberries feild berries) and make them into a smoothie in the blender. Its my choice during the week - quick easy and i can take it with me if i'm running late. One weekends i tend to make myself a french toast or scrambled eggs.
