Ferdinand and Vidic

Nemanja Vidic - Nemanja Vidic's strong physical presence is the key to Man Utd's defensive solidity last season.

Last season, Ferdinand and Vidic were extremely superb. They were consistent, kept many clean sheets, very strong mentally in big matches and provide excellent cover for Van Der Sar. Ferdinand is a very composed defender with excellent tackling ability. He also prefers to feed the ball to the midfielders and initiate the attack from there. At times Ferdinand does display some excellent footballing skills, in the way he gets past players, and scores the odd goals. Vidic is a different type of defender. He is strong in the air, has strong physical attributes, and provides that aggressiveness in the Man Utd back four, making it difficult for strikers to gain possession. The both of them complement each other very well and they produce an excellent defensive partnership. I personally think that the both of them were the two best defenders in the world last season. However, this season, they haven't performed so well. They've conceded more goals, made more unforced errors during matches, and didn't look as strong defensively as last season. Why is this happening? But I do believe that this is something that Sir Alex will look to improve on and I hope over the course of the season, their performances will improve as this season is much tougher than the last, with Chelsea and Liverpool performing better than they did last season.

If agree with ram_cv...Rio Ferdinand always showing lack of concentration this season. That's why we always see Johnny Evans being used sparingly in his place to pair with Vidic. During the off season, I have read in one article that predict Man Utd backline will be a bit weaker due to the departure of.....Carlos Quieroz. Because in the last season, Quieroz is the one who masterminded the defensive aspect in Man Utd team. However I'm not sure whether this article that I read is true or not. I hope Vidic and Ferdinand can be performs like the old times again.

Carlos Quieroz is an enigma to me... At Man U everyone rates him very high, but yet when he goes on his own, he does not nearly seem that good... May be he is one of the best persons to be the second man and not the first man in charge... Cheers! Ram

Yes, Carlos Queiroz is a big loss to Man Utd. But let's hope the Vidic-Ferdinand partnership can solidify again and hit their top form like last season. Man Utd will need to get back to their strong defensive form as this season is much tougher to win.

Actually this year Vidic has been brilliant, but Rio seems to have gone off the boil a little bit. Also Van der Sar is showing signs of slowing down with age. That is what is affecting Man United. Rio is now beginning to have lapses of concentration once every two match this season whereas Van der Sar had a bad start to the season. Vidic is still the rock of the Man Utd. defence, but with Rio and Van der sar being inconsistent, it asks a bit too much for him to cover up... That to me is why this season is a ifsy butsy season for Man U. Cheers! Ram

Let's hope that it is a temporary thing, and that Rio can quickly get back to his good form as he showed last season. But last season, I believe Rio is a bit better than Vidic. They're are both very good, but I think Rio edges it. At times, when the other team was so close to scoring, one man is there to save the team, and that is Rio Ferdinand. In many matches Rio has been the hero in the United defence.

Don't get me wrong, I agree absolutely that he has been a great player for Man U. But this season, by his own high standards he seems to be gone down a bit... Cheers! Ram
