I see SO many discussions about Fast Food outlets...and am really wondering what you would do...if there were NONE accessible to you? Do you rely on them often?

As I live in the bush... 60 kilometres from the nearest shop... fast food outlets are a thing of the past for me. So I cook 7 days a week. The food is better for my health... and it is cheaper.

I am in sheep country... and that's all the place is good for. The soil is of clay... and if it does not rain for a month... everything start dying and you need a pic to dig an hole in the ground. So a vegie garden is out of the question. Even if I went to the trouble of getting some top soil to make a small garden... I would not have the water to keep it alive. We just came out of a drought 12 months ago. In 2005 - 2006... the place almost looked like a desert and I was without water.

Wow! And yes, I do remember seeing the drought you have on the news! I am guessing that you rely on well water, as do I! Over the years, I have put in wider gutters, and gathered everything I can for storage! We have a real wet, rainy period, here on the coast.....so I collect everything I can during that time!Due to the increase in construction, therefore increase in wells drilled, mine has gone from 2 gallons a minute to a 16th of a gallon a minute! Hence, I also have 3 outhouses! I do have a real idea, about lack of water...to me it is liquid gold! What is the nearest town to you....are you in the desert area on the route to Darwin? Cheers, Aussies, nice to hear from you!

HEY,Aussies2007...nice to hear from you! Do sometimes wonder if you got lost in the Outback! Congratulations on your living arrangement...isn't it amazing how we can get by without all of that INconvenience? I am not nearly as far as you away from civilization....but it is a 2 hour Ferry ride each way, so 4 hours out of your day, I do it seldom, have not been to "the big smoke" since August! So I shop in bulk! But gotta admit...do not know what I would do without a freezer! None of my business, but do you grow a garden...have livestock? I have chickens, and my goat crossed the rainbow bridge...so will wait for spring (here) to get a new family! Having my own eggs...I can hardly stomach the times when my chickens are fallow (moulting)...or my goat dries up! Hope you have a "spirited" holiday season! Cheers!

I would be fine without fast food places. I normally visit them twice a week, always for breakfast. But I'd be just fine if they weren't available. Even when I go to one I always get things I know that aren't full of fat. But if I were forced to always eat at home, I imagine I would eat even more healthy in the mornings.

A lot of the fast good places around here serve fruit and yogurt for breakfast.

You betchum, my friend..your diet would be a lot healthier! I don't know what breakfast foods there in "fast food" outlets, but I just don't worry about the fat content...chemicals/salts/bleached flour and sometime I wonder if they add something to your foods that make you addicted! Is there somewhere at a "fast food"outlet that you could get something like a fresh fruit salad (no bleaches to keep the fruit from turning brown) and whole wheat toast? I am like a duck out of water when it comes to these things! Maybe it is mental that my body always rejects "fast foods." Could that be? Nice to hear from you my friend, how is the preps for holiday season going? Cheers!

We usually don't do the fast food thing unless we are out and not going to be home near lunch time. My shopping schedule would probably change and we would do more sandwiches on the shopping days. It sure would save a lot of cash if they weren't out there on every other street corner and with blocks full of them calling to you "stop here", "no over", "here we are the best".

Good morning, deebomb! I'll bet you & yours are a whole world healthier for not giving in to those "come & get it signs!" I really have come to believe after all the years that I have lived without it, that there is something "toxic" about it!If I do succumb when I go to a Metropolitan area, I do KNOW that for days after I will suffer! Especially horrendous heartburn & loose (yuk)bowels! I don't know whether it is the cooking method, the contents, or the fact that you are eating "in a fast food environment"...scarfing down your food! Albeit, not to mention, I think the heartburn may come from the fact that I have just spent "hard-earned" cash on something that is not good for me! Hope you're having a great day! Rainbows...& Cheers!

i dont rely on fast food, it's a luxury for me, so i'd be ok. i can't afford fast food, so i eat it when i absolutely have to. i buy groceries once a week for everyday breakfast, lunch n dinner. i used to eat fast food religiously then i realized i was spending about 400 a month on it, that was ridiculous to me because i would also spend about 400 a month on groceries. now we have to start budgeting and fast food just isnt in the budget.

I think that now that we are faced with an economic crisis..people are really starting to watch where their dollars are going! Imagine, now, what you could have done with that $400.00! And lo & behold, it isn't really that healthy for you! I think that my biggest difficulty with always eating at home, is that I run out of ideas.....and know better than to go on line, or grab a magazine for ideas, cause on this small Island where I live, there really is a not a great choice! In season, I can just go to the beach (about 1.4 miles away) for clams, oysters or mussels, and when my boat is in the water I can set the Crab traps, there is Salmon or Cod in the area (but the supplies are almost exhausted)! And gotta admit that I sometimes have my own brand of Fast Food for supper! Poached eggs! Omelette! Those lazy nites! Have a super week & Cheers!

I don't rely on them but I do find them handy at times...

I hear you....but I do wonder, if because I so seldom indulge, that is the reason that it all disagrees with me so much! I think I can count on one hand the # of meals that I have had in a restaurant/fast food...and I always suffer! And of course, like I said before it could all be in my head! On this small Island where I live, we only have two places to eat out, and once you've exhausted them, it's home cooking! Glad you're back, pinklily! Cheers!

To be honest no. I don't like fast food outlets such as McDonalds, PizzaHut or Burger King. We have small outlets selling pizzas, cheese cakes and other fattening things that are difficult to resist. I like pizza a lot. I know it is not good for health but sometimes when we are in a hurry to cook food we opt to buy take away food. 50/50 vinager and water solution in my machine and it got the smell out.

Good on you, I really don't think there is much nutritional benefit in the Fast Foods in most outlets. Probably just fill you up with synthetics for bad health! For pizza's, we make our own with whole wheat flour, and use things like chicken & veggies, really quite good...and good for you 'cuz we know the ingredients! Yes, I gotta admit that a good piece of cheesecake is very tempting, but I'll bet that comes from your local bakery! Gosh...now you've got my mouth watering for a nice strawberry cheesecake. LOL

Hi pergammano, for me I don’t mind if there is even not a single fast food outlet in my place as I don’t solely depend on any fast food selling there. Most of the time, we prepare our homemade dishes for the daily three main meals. There is a wet market very close to my house where we could get fresh vegetables and fish, meat and other stuffs conveniently there. I think taking too much fast food is considered to be not good for our health. We would visit fast food outlets only once in a while if we feel like having a change of taste. Anyhow when we go travelling we have no choice but to take the fast food in the outlet especially when we are in a hurry. posting and take care.

Ikbooi...yes, I hear you, when travelling it sometimes is convenient! But, I find now, that when travelling (I have a travel time of 4 hours total by Ferries (no food)on them) that I will go to Safeway, where they have a deli...and you can get Salads, sandwiches of your choice, on bread of your choice! You can make healthy decisions.....and not suffer from the guilt of the junk you have just eaten! Forgot to tell you, love your avatar! Such a pretty flower...is it indigenous to your area? Have a wonderful day, my friend!

I really don't mind. I don't rely on fastfood outlets. They are great tasting but usually they contain a lot of preservatives that is not good for health. As much as possible I eat foods that are prepared at home. When I am not at home, there are a lot of small restaurants commonly called carenderia in our area, I prefer them over fastfoods, not only that there are no preservatives, they are also cheaper.

We live on a tight budget and don't have take aways very often so it wouldn't bother me if there were no fast food outlets

Anne18...personally I feel that is why some people's budgets are tight! The money that a family of 4 would spend at MacDonalds for one supper would keep me in food, probably for a week! Notwithstanding how devastating it is to one's health! Happy frugal living, my dear!

It wouldn't affect me at all really, I try to avoid fast food because it's getting expensive and I'm always broke. Fast Food tends to make me sick after eating it as well so I'd rather just have a nice home cooked meal or nothing.

Good morning, jambi462. Now you're talking my language! Living on a small Island we have no FAST FOOD...no take out food (other than what you take out from the 2 small grocers we have here, to take home to cook.) LOL! When I do go to a Metropolitan area...and eat any Fast Food...I suffer for days after! What is it that makes us sick? Cheers!
