The eggnog tradition

Christmas is coming and so is the eggnog! Eggnog is made from milk, cream, sugar, and beaten eggs and flavored with cinnamon and nutmeg. Wikipedia says that it is mainly consumed in the Americas but also can be found in Europe where it is usually an alcoholic drink. When my husband, my children and I travel to our families on Christmas week, we always have to stop at a certain gas station/market to get our yearly "fix" of eggnog! Actually, it's mostly for my daughter who loves it. Personally, I like a few sips once a year and then I'm done. Do you drink eggnog? Only at Christmas? Non-alcoholic or spiked? Do you make your own? Is there a family recipe?

I love eggnog! My mom makes it homemade, and it's marvelous. She makes it with light cream and whole milk, eggs and spices. She adds brandy, rum or Southern Comfort for the adults (but the kids can usually get away with sneaking a few sips) and vanilla for the under-21s. Okay... mince pies, candy canes and eggnog - I'm definitely getting into a holiday mood now.

Thanks chameleonsdream! I knew someone must still be making it from scratch! Is it better than store bought?

I like a few sips from time to time but its so rich. Its really too rich for me. I do buy it in the cartons on ocassion and have bought it for company. I can live with it or without it, wonder if people are making this homemade or just buying it already made?

Oh that really is strange to me. This is my first time to hear about your eggnog tradition. You know what here in the Philippines, eggnog is a coin-sized tiny cookies either chocolate or vanilla flavored. They are meant for kids.

Eggnog isn't so big in Asia (or maybe just my part of Asia... LOL) but it sounds good (save the part about the RAW eggs) i remember one Christmas when some relatives sent over a pack of instant eggnog mix from the States. I actually liked that one but i'm sure the homemade version is like 100% better :)

i don't like it personally, and im not much of a drinker either, but i can't stand it without it being spiked, i have sipped it here and there spiked before though. i don't think my family has an actual recipe, i truly thought it was just universal.

I really didn't even know if people made it from scratch anymore since they don't advise eating raw eggs. Hmmmmm......

I'm an eggnog lover, I admit it. I only see it sold around this time of year, and I can't make it myself. So I enjoy the chances I get to have it. There is a place here that makes eggnog shakes, and also has eggnog ice cream and pumpkin ice cream. I love the pumpkin ice cream, but I haven't had any this year. I don't drink at all, so my eggnog is always non alocoholic. I think I'm the only one in my family who likes eggnog. So if I want some, I always buy it myself. I know they won't ever want any!

I don't like eggnog, but my family does and Weigels has some great eggnog, or so my husband and son say so, that is also a gas station/convenience market.. I was watching the cooking channel and I think that it was Paula Deen making homemade eggnog, it looked really easy.. But all that my family has ever had is the store bought kind.. We haven't spiked in years, but I do barely remember orange juice tasting a bit better when spiked, or at least I think that I remember.. Oh well, after all it was a party..

I absolutly LOOOOVe eggnogg!! I have never made it myself yet though. Maybe this year I will give it a go. I'm afraid it won't turn out as yummy. lol. I have never had spiked eggnogg before. I think I prefer it just the plain old fashioned way!

We have eggnog around the holidays. The kids really like it. Now McDondals has the eggnog shakes so they are really happy :) I occasionally will spike my eggnog with peach schnapps, or something else depending on who is visiting ...LOL I think I am going to try and make our own this christmas.

I personally love eggnog. It is one of the Christmas traditions that I look forward to all year. My wife and I always drink it while decorating the house with National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation playing in the backgound... When I was stationed in Germany in the early 1990's, some guys would pay for their rent with a couple of gallons of it. I guess theat you could only find it on station, and their landlord loved it! I guess it make a great barter tool too!
