How old were you when you had your first cellphone?

I was 20 years old when I bought my first cellphone. I was studying in overseas, and the package was quite reasonable, it came with the cellphone and also a prepaid card with some credits inside. So, I just bought it, and it'd be more convenient to have a cellphone if I'm going out traveling. Of course, many kids nowadays already started to use cellphone when they are 5 or 6 years old. How about you?

lol!!! I am 37 so they weren't even around when I was a kid!!! I remember some really rich people (I wasn't rich!!) had them when I was a teenager. You could always tell who had them because of the weird antenna on their car (they were called "car phones" back then). I remember it got to the point you could buy a fake antenna for your car to make it look like you had a "car phone". When I was 25 (1996), I was pregnant with my 1st child and our phone service went out for 8 days and so my dad let me borrow his portable phone. It was this big phone in a bag. YIKES!!! I finally got a real cell phone when my son was 3 1/2 (1999) and I was 29. Now it feels like I have always had it. My husband and I are about to give our oldest son (now 12 1/2) his first cell phone for Christmas. With almost no pay phones around anymore, we feel safer if he can get a hold of us.

I remember those huge "car phones" too! I'm a bit older than you but I was never into the techo phase of things... 1996 was when we got a car phone because we were traveling so much and thought it'd be good for the travels as I traveled alot on my own... however did same travel on my own with 2 kids years prior with no car/cell phone and did just fine withoutit. But yeah, those huge car phones, and the "roaming" charges and areas not covered, etc! What I started out with was sometimes I had a CB radio - mounted under the dash with the handset button thingy. The guy the invented car phones and then merged them into cell phones worked for Motorolla and got the idea from Captian Kirk on Star Trek and his communicator and made one! Just took a few years to trim it down to captain kirk size!

Hi eclecticeducation, I have never seen any car phone before, but I've seen those really big portable phone from the TV. Cellphones started to be popular in my country only when I went to college. Before that, most of us use house phone or public phone to make calls.

coffeebreak, There are so many "new terms" to me, I have never heard of those before. Perhaps they didn't exist in my country, or they are just not around me.

I didn't get one until I was 19 and a freshman in college. I got it for Christmas that year from my parents. I shared one with my mom during high school. If I was going somewhere (i.e. high school sporting events, out with friends) then I would take the cell phone so she could get a hold of me if she needed something. My fiancee just got one this past June and he's 22. He waited until after he graduated from college to get one and he always said he wasn't going to get one. We don't use our phones that much but since he is a software engineer and creates programs for cell phones and blackberries he needed one.

Your fiancee is great, he creates programs for cell phones and blackberries? So, he can always download the programs he wrote into his cell phone? ^_^

Yeah, he can. He doesn't have a blackberry so he can't get those applications but the games he makes for regular cell phones he can put on his phone. He's put a couple of them on my phone. He also makes programs for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It's pretty much a dream job in my opinion! (If only I knew how to write computer code...)

Well, I had my first cellphone when I was 21. It took me long time to buy the phone considering that I have to save money for such. My parents could not afford, so I have to save money out of what I get from my part time job earnings.

I was 22 years old .I had just finished college and I needed my cell phone so that I could make calls to different work places because I didnt have a landline .I remember it now it was siemens blue with black stripes along the sides. It was heavy and thick when compared to modern sleek thin phones.I think it was also costly by modern standards ,if I bought it today it would have cost half of that amount .Loved it very much though

Thanks for your response. Yeah, it's actually easy to the company to contact you if you have a cellphone, otherwise you might miss some opportunities.

I was almost 24 when I got my first cell phone. Of course, it was at a time when cell phones first became affordable to the general public.

I got my first cellphone when I was 16 years old. I just graduated in high school then and my parents bought me a cellphone as a gift. It was also a necessity for me as I am going to college. There are lots of time that I need to do projects that make me go home late at night so cellphone is handy for me. My parents could contact me and it makes easy to communicate with my classmates for group assignments.I have seen many kids nowadays that have cellphones even though they don't need it yet as my opinion. They are so young but I guessed it's how things worked nowadays.

i was 17 years old and it was a very cheap one. Not many people had cell phones at my school at the time, but there were quite a few people who did have. Those were the rich kids. Nowadays every single member of the family will have a cell phone and some have more than one cell phone. Different service provider = different phone.

Yeah, I still remember my parents said, back to the days when they were young, there weren't colored television, many people couldn't even afford a black and white television, but nowadays, it's hard to believe there's no television at home.

I was 19 when I had my first cellphone. I was in college that time and I had to leave home for 3 months for my practicum so my parents gave me a cellphone as their advanced graduation gift for me. My niece, on the other hand, had her first ever cellphone when she was 8. It was a cellphone which I handed down to her when I had a new one. Although she was too young to have a cellphone then, she was not really into it. She just used it for games. But know, she is already 15 and uses her cellphone for socializing and texting with her classmates and friends.

If the kids are educated well to use the cellphone properly, I think it's fine to let them use the cellphone. Sometimes, it's for convenience. Thanks for your response. ^_^

It seems like many people actually disagree that kids are having cellphones now. Nowadays, many parents just give what the kids want, isn't it? Thanks for your response. ^_^

Cellphone is for our own convenience, so it doesn't matter whether it's really powerful or not, as long as we can make and receive calls, right? ^_^ Thanks for your response.
