Do you prefer baked or steamed 'Fruitcake' for Christmas?

Of the two methods I prefer those steamed fruit cake. I have malaysianised my fruit cake in which I steam my fruitcakes and add some local fruits in it like adding glazed winter melon, condensed milk and using slightly burned sugar instead of brown sugar. Like baking steaming also takes 4 hours to get the best result. Comparatively steam fruitcakes taste better, they are more moist and the fruits are plump. Have you ever tasted steamed fruitcakes?

Hi Zandi, I have tasted steamed apple pie, prepared by my friends wife. But not steamed cake,I will be glad to try your innovative dish, provided you give the recipe.

Of course you can use any tropical fruits except durian as the whole cake will no longer be called fruitcake but durian cake. You can always buy those glazed manggo in packets and slice into pieces and add in together with the mixed fruit. You can add cashew nuts or walnuts too. It taste fantastic. Try that.

Actually it is the same as the traditional fruitcake but the only difference is that we add extra fruits and is steamed.

I never knew fruitcakes could be steamed until I saw your post! I've been used to baked fruitcakes only and steamed fruitcake is really a strange thing to me. And you said it taste even better! I think I would try making my own and see for myself if I could successfully get the best result. Wish me luck!

Oh Salonga most of our cakes here have gone under steaming. There is another beautiful cake I call nestum cake and this is using nestum as the main ingredient. A small amount of flour is used. This cake is really finger licking as well as the steam fruitcake. Try that out.

The fact is I like baking and cooking and I would try every method to create something different and this fruitcake turn out to be better steamed than baked. Maybe that would change your taste bud if you have tasted the steamed fruitcake.

I tell you this is finger licking and you will never have enough of it. Take out any dundee recipes from the net and modify it a bit to suit your likings, whatever fruits you wish to put in, but must not be fresh, use those glazed fruits sold in packets and you will never try those baked ones again.

The only fruit cake I like is rum soaked. I don't know if it's steamed or baked. I just want it soaked for abut 6 weeks prior to coming to me.

Well we can always do that too, soaked the fruits before mixing in the cake mixture and steam them. After steaming and cooked, pour rum on cake and it is done. As good if not better then those baked fruitcake.
