I'm sure all of you are familiar with picture books: books that use illustrations, often in chronological order, to tell a story. Picture books don't have any text. Now, my question is, do you think that you're able to "read" picture books? Or do you think that looking at pictures and interpreting the story this way isn't really considered "reading"? If you think so, then what would you call it? Reading is defined on Wikipedia as the cognitive process of deriving meaning from written or printed text. Or... is it? =P

I think it is considered 'reading'. Perhaps not 'advanced reading' in today's society, but it is important to be able to interpret stories from images. Understanding picture books can be considered a skill as well, I guess. A picture book described on Wikipedia: "While the pictures are iconic representations, resembling in some way the objects they depict, the words are arbitrary signs, with no actual resemblance to the thing they refer to. As a result, words and pictures convey different kinds of information and the words and the pictures in a picture book communicate different aspects of the story they tell together. They tend then to have an ironic relationship to each other - one tells or shows what the other is silent about." A person able to completely 'get' a story told through a picture book must be pretty good at "deriving meaning", no? Omegh@@ You used Wikipedia! Unreliable source!@@@@ W-t-f!1

xD xD But deriving meaning from pictures isn't the same as deriving meaning from text! I think it's considered reading too, but only because there's no other word for it. xD

I think it is possible to 'read' a picture book. It is a form of reading, deriving meaning from context clues and subtleties in the picture. It can cause a person to become a more sophisticated reader, buy developing an appreciation for context clue and subtleties in written word.

A few years back Marvel comics did this thing called "Nuff Said" It was different comics all without any dialog. The artwork was well done and really got the story across especially in the Hulk issue. It remains one of my favourite issues till date. So yes, reading pictures is possible if the art is well done.
