Factories and Smoke stacks..

We always tend to associate a factory with a smokestack. Look at the avatar for this "interest" itself for instance. While it is true, that not every factory need have a smokestack for it to be seen working, do you foresee in the near future or if it is gonna be possible only in the far future, what is your best guess when all the world over there won't be a single factory with a smokestack?
