Are you afraid of going to the Dentist?

I must say that I'm not personally afraid of going to the dentist. However, it's true that it depends on your personal experience with them. I am lucky and i have never had much trouble with my teeth: i have never needed braces, and apart from some fillings, never had any major trouble with them. I suppose that if you are unlucky with your teeth and need to visit the dentist more often than me and go through more complicated surgeries and therapies, perhaps my opinion would change, I don't know. How about you friends? are you afraid of going to the dentist? Why?

I am terrified of the dentist. I have had bad experiences though. But it is to the point now that if I need to have anything done other then a cleaning, that I need to take something for my nerves or I panic. See I had a root canal done, and the tooth was badly infected. I took antibiotics and they gave me pain meds, but the infection still wasn't gone when they did the root canal and in so the stuck the needle with the novacaine into the nerve of my tooth and I can't describe the pain it was just bad. I told my mom it was worse then giving birth and I did that with no pain meds. So ever since that has happened, I have a fear of the dentist. Your lucky to not have too many issues with your teeth!! I'm sorry that you find it so difficult to go to the dentist. Obviously you've had to visit the dentist more often than me, and for worse things, so i suppose that's why you and i think differently about them, hehe. Anyway, thanks a lot for replying and sharing your experiences :)

I'm not really that afraid of the dentist but I have a teeth extraction coming up soon and it's got me kind of nervous. They're taking out two teeth and they're using an IV to sedate me and that's got me all nervous. The IV sedation thing has me more bothered than the whole taking teeth out thing.

The IV sedation is not bad at all, I did that when I had my wisdom teeth out. They were impacted and sideways - no chance of them coming up and no room besides. My teeth were really jammed up anyway before braces and the impactions were just making it worse. You won't remember much if anything with the sedation, and they DO use some local as well so you're numb afterwards.

I use to be really scared of the dentist when I was younger and even now a days my stomach tightens up a bit before I go. When I was younger the dentist didn't numb my gums up before he pulled my tooth out so it hurt like hell and after that I didn't want to go to a dentist. My mom would have to give me something to relax me just so I would go to have my teeth cleaned. The dentist that I have now is awesome. He gets in there does what he has to do and gets out. I went to a dentist once and it took her 4 days to do a root canal. I should of started charging her with all the work I had to miss to get it done.

YES. Because I do not know whether it is the novacaine or the simple fact that I am helpless as the dentist and hygenist is hovering over me and my head is practically turned upside down...I get claustrophobia. My dentist is really good though he notices when I freak out....my feet dancing in the seat and my hands practically white...he backs off and sits me up for a few minutes. I very afraid of the day he says I need to have my wisdom teeth pulled, but as ofnow I have others first to take care of filling wise. Unfortunately visits are inevitable...periodontical disease runs in the family. So I have to make sure everything is on the up and up so I never loose my teeth. so far so good and that says alot considering I am from KY.

No. I never have been. Though, like you, I havent had much trouble with my teeth either, so maybe you are right. Maybe it just depends on personal experience. I actually like going to the dentist for checkups cuz then I know that my teeth are ok. If something is wrong with them I want to know before it gets too bad, ya know?

I am not too afraid; I don't enjoy going but it is ok. I have not had any really bad experiences at the dentist. What I fear more, every time I go for a check up is how much the treatment is going to cost! I have been taking my little girl with me when I go and I get her to sit in the chair and just have her teeth looked at so that she hopefully will not grow up fearing the dentist. My mother still goes and is not too afraid considering that around 35 years ago her dentist used to fill and extract her teeth without an anaesthetic! Ouch! It's amazing it hasn't scared her off for life!

Personally for me, it would be Very expensive for me to go to any Dentist as I have not been to one for many yrs. I am Diabetic, and have a lot of issues due to that, and am on Insulin, etc. so most Dentists do not even want to consider touching my teach, and since I need to have most of my teeth pulled now and partials put in, I am Very afraid of the pain now as well. I think there needs to be an easier way?

Hello LightninStrike, No, I am not afraid to go to the dentist. I am just lazy to go everyday. I have several problem with my teeth and I have several visits with the dentist that they have to extract a tooth and perform root canal. It is a scary feeling and the one that I don't want is the root canal. It takes long and you have to go back several days before it's done. Another thing I don't like is when you have abcess tooth that needs to be extracted. You can feel it even with it is anesthesised. So going to the dentist is realy bad unless you are just going for a clean up. It is better to brush your teeth three times a day and avoid to much sweet. Regards.

I was afraid the very first time I have to see a dentist. And watching the suspense thriller, "The Dentist" didn't help either! But I was more afraid of the injection I have to endure. But my mother didn't allow me to turn back and run. She made sure that she will bring me to my very first visit to the dentist, even if she had to drag me all the way. Fortunately, the dentist understood my fear and promised me that it will be over soon. And it did. And that helped me overcome my fear of the injection and whatever procedures I may have to face in the future. But as I grew up, I made sure that my visit to the dentist won't need anymore complicated procedures aside from the regular cleaning and fillings.

I am for sure afraid of going to the dentist. I would say even more so after my last trip to the dentist because I had to have a tooth pulled. I also had braces when i was younger. I had to take a pill for my anxiety last time I went to the dentist because I couldn't stop shaking long enough for her to do the exam. I hope that I stop getting so nervous before going to the dentist, but who knows.

I have not had any real issues, and have only been to the dentist once. It was to get a painful wisdom tooth removed. The sound it made as it was being removed was horrible, and it was painful for quite sometime after. So, now, dentistry makes me a little uneasy. My partner has had a lot of work done, and he seems unnerved when he goes in.

The only fear I have of the dentist is his/her bill.

I am terrified of the dentist. I have never had any major medical procedures completed, but I am never the less petrified. I think it important to find a dentist that you trust and feel comfortable with. Atleast, as comfortable as you are going to feel lol. I can't say exactly why I am so afraid, but I know that it has gotten worse as I have gotten older. I talked to my medical practitioner and they perscribed something which helps a bit to calm my nerves.

Dentists don't frighten me. As soon as I sit in the chair I grab him by the balls and say, "We're not going to hurt each other, are we?"

I sure am and it's because no matter how much novacaine that they inject me with, I still can feel all the pain. It's horrible! Even with being given the nitrous oxide gas you still have to worry about them giving you too much. The sounds and smells associated with a dentist's office even scare me. Just thinking of getting my teeth drilled is uncomfortable for me.
