HELP, I need an anti-virus for my laptop!

Philippines
December 18, 2008 12:21am CST
I have no anti-virus in my computer. I got some files downloaded to my laptop and then copied the same files to my USB and put the USB to a computer in the internet cafe. When I used the USB in my laptop again, some files were deleted. When I checked my USB for viruses, it shocked me for all files were "infected" with viruses. I'm afraid my laptop also has a virus. Anyone can help me where to get a free anti-virus? What is the most effective anti-virus? Thanks.

I have went through the responses, and all of them have a good idea. There are many anti-virus program but there is no "The Best Anti-Virus Program". If you have the money, you can buy anti-virus program, but if otherwise, you may want to try one of the free edition of anti-virus. For that, I suggest AVG free edition, it works well on my laptop. Not just that, I have read many review on AVG free edition, and many people claimed, for a free edition, AVG is working great. Again, there is no "The Best Anti-Virus Program". So, you may want to install two anti-virus. As for me, I use AVG anti-virus free edition plus, I also use COMODO Internet Security. COMODO Internet Security has both firewall and anti-virus program. I make COMODO as my main anti-virus, where I shut down AVG (through msconfig), and once or twice in a day, I turn AVG on, update it, and scan my whole laptop with AVG. After it done, I turn it off again. This is because some viruses can be detected by some anti-virus program when other cant. Just to let you know, your laptop may have been infected by viruses without you realizing it, so, after you install anti-virus program, the anti-virus may not able to detect the viruses. Especially if the viruses has clarify itself as the administrator of your computer. It happen to me once! So, if I were you, I will format my computer first, then I will install firewall and anti-virus program. Goodluck! Let me know the update. :)

You can go to www.download.com and type "COMODO Internet Security" or you can just type "COMODO". Go through the reviews, it may help you. By the way, you can directly go to www.comodo.com. Goodluck friend!

I think you should install a good firewall and antivirus. Some good free software are available at download.com.

I don't have a firewall right now. How do I install it? I have heard it many times but I still don't know about it. Maybe you could explain it to me so I would fully understand it.

Hello dorisday1971, I am using avast free anti-virus. I used Norton and AVG before I switched to avast. My problem with Norton and AVG is the file to update the virus signature are large and because of my dialup connections, it will take several minutes before it is updated. I also still get some virus though. I been using avast for six months and it seems to be working fine. Update is just a few minutes and it is done on the background while you are surfing the internet. I also don't need to run it weekly. Once you plugin in something or download something, it automatically scan. I think I only run it once when I just installed it and now it just set there checking your computer. Why don't you try it, it is free for home user. Regards.

I am also now using Avast anti virus and so far, it's working fine. This anti virus didn't affected the speed of my computer as well as my internet connection even when I was using dial up before.

We use Avast which is free online. I've used it for years with good results. Mine is set to scan anything coming on my computer, even my email. But you would do good to use another program, called Advanced Windows Care, which is also a free product. It checks everything on your computer, even your registry and fixes it for you. It is good combined with Avast. I love them both.

I've never used that one. I do think that Kaspersky is the best one. I used it until they started charging for it and I found Avast.

hello there friend... i suggest you to try kaspersky internet security... it's the best anti-virus ever... it scans and detects every virus in your computer... it also actively monitors your computer in real-time to prevent any virus getting into your computer... it doesn't take a lot of RAM and computer loads so it's really perfect anti-virus solution for you... another good anti-virus is NOD32's ESET smart security... this anti-virus also good it the scanning and protecting terms... try it both... then you can determine which is best for your computer...

Use AVAST! This FREE software was actually suggested by my internet provider... there are 2 free downloads you need... the 'cleaner' and the antivirus 'home'... The only thing my internet provider stressed prior to dowloading the software is that I uninstall my old antivirus software (which was norton). I have had no problems with AVAST and am very happy!
