How would you define a stock photo?

As i'm considering selling stock photos online, I just wanted a little better of an idea of what a stock photo is in the first place! I have a fairly good idea, and I could probably manage without any help but the more knowledge the better, right? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

Stock photos are photographs which are given (licensed) to an individual or corporation for his own purpose only.Publishers use stock photos in their books instead of hiring a photographer to take the actual photos.Hope this helped.
