Is “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” Religious?

A kindergarten Christmas show at the Murrayville Elementary School in Wilmington, N.C., generated quite the stir when a mother complained about the inclusion of the song, "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer". She objected to what she called "religious overtones" in the song. So the principal agreed to pull it from the program. Other parents, hearing the news, called to complain to have the song put back into the show. "I would say it's not a very religious song. It's about Santa Claus," parent Anne Vanslyke said. School board members, administrators and attorneys listened closely to the song's lyrics and decided the song was secular. Many parents shouted out with glee when they found out that Rudolph would be leaing the way, not only on Santa's sleigh, but in the Christmas show as well. What are your thoughts? Do you think public school students should be allowed to sing Christmas songs at school holiday concerts?

That's actually absurd. They're trying to keep religious things and songs out of schools. Don't they realize that the lack of it is causing all the confusion with the kids? Children now-a-days are without values anymore.

I believe that it is a lack of parenting that is the problem with children and not the absence of religion. A lot of people raise their children in front of the television these days. Video games also do not help. The lack of religion has nothing to do with it.

The song isn't religious. And does it really matter? Seriously. I hold very little faith in religion and could care less if they sang songs with religious over tones. I feel that they would be better off if they were not sheltered from it. Some parents think they will be able to control the world to suit their beliefs. But they never will. The world is very diverse and children need to understand that.
