We were able to get chicks this month. I ordered 16 chicks from Ideal. We have 5 RIR's (1 roo, 4 pullets), 5 Araucana's (1 roo, 4 pullets), 3 Golden Sebrights Bantums (Straight Run) and 3Mille Fleur's Bamtums (Straight Run). Out of those 16 one of the bantums died from each breed, so we are down to 14. We received them on the 11th and they have grown quite a bit since then. They are trying to fly around their box now. I have to move them to the shelter outside soon. They are really stinking up the house. Anyone else get chicks this winter?

I used to raise chicken many years ago. We would get up to 100 for the freezer. We always got them in about March or April. What a job it was to clean the coop and to butcher them. we would keep a few for eggs too. It was nice to have firm chicken meat. The stuff you get at the stores is so soft and mushy. Besides you knew what they were fed. when my grandmother got older she would raise the bantams from biddies or setting hens. They were always so pretty to watch. I don't know what kind they were but some had top knots and feathers along their legs and on their feet.

We got these for eggs and hopefully they will have biddies that we can raise for meat as well. I don't know if I have the courage to raise that many at one time. My hats off to you! I remember when I was very little my mama, aunt and uncle killing chickens. I could remember the smell but they would never let me go near the area where they were killed and dipped in the boiling water. I love all of the different pretty breeds and I would have a pair of each kind if we had the room! I got 6 bantams and only 3 survived. I will never order them in the winter again. I will order them during the late spring, early summer from now on. One of my fiance's friends has an animal rescue operation going and he gets tons of chickens that people cannot look after. I love to watch all of the different kinds running around their house. They have at least 50 chickens and they all seem to be different breeds. The roosters are so very pretty!

My neighbor got chicks this winter. I took a short video for the kids. I rent so I can't get any chicks. But I wish I could. Cause than I would. As I grew up my dad raised chickens. I always liked it to.

I rent also, I requested to have them. We are on a ten acre lot though. You should just ask and see what sort of response you get, might surprise you. I grew up with my aunt and uncle raising the chickens and I remember so clearly my mama helping out with the freezer camp part. They would never let me see anything but I can remember the big cast iron pot they hung over the fire. I would always help gather eggs and such. It was a pleasant childhood memory. I have been wanting to do this for so long and now I finally am! Thanks for your comment!
