I had co-worker tell me, "You are crazy to buy your pets a Christmas gift! Christmas is to celebrate Christ's birth and a cat certainly can't understand that." Do you think I am crazy for buying my cat a Christmas gift? What would you have replied to my co-worker?

First, how does this co-worker know that your cat doesn't understand it's Christ's birthday. There were a lot of animals at His birth to begin with, so maybe your cat does understand. Or if your cat doesn't, so what? Why shouldn't you buy a pet a gift. I buy my pets and other people's pets Christmas gifts all the time. Why shouldn't they celebrate the season along with the rest of us. As for your co-worker don't bother trying to convince her. She's not going to listen anyway, she has her own opinions. Just smile and walk away and think to yourself, "Well, you're entitled to your opinion I guess, but opinions are like feet. Everyone has at least two and sometimes some of them can stink a little."

Yeah, I always liked that saying myself. I can't take credit for it, though. My dad when he was alive used to say that a lot. I always loved it. Have a great Christmas and Merry Christmas to your cat as well.

Hmmmmm, in my opinion, she's the one who's nuts lol. Christmas is a celebration of Christ's birth, but it is also a time in the year when we honor those who we love and think highly of with a gift. I get my dogs each a chew bone, and a bag of little kittie treats for my cats to enjoy. Silly? Maybe...but the joy that they give me makes me want to reciprocate and show them a little extra love too. To me, Christmas is all about love: love of our family, our friends, and those who do little (and big) deeds for us without being asked. I think pets do all kinds of good 'deeds' for us without being asked, and they do it every day of the week with no questions asked. Just like Christ, they show us unjudgemental love, so who better to give a little extra to?! I think I would have given her a somewhat similar reply.

NEither can a newborn baby or the mentally disabled or the senile or people suffering from alzheimer's. Christmas is for us to celebrate the ones we love and I know I love my pets. So yes, buy them a gift and tell your co-worker you can and will do what you want..and I said that you can!

Heh I know you're crazy now. You mean to tell me you didn't have an answer for the co-worker, MY OH MY you've been away from myLot for too long my dearest friend. It's against myLot rules to tell you what I would have told the co worker. I will say however my Maltese puppy will be getting a Christmas gift too. My puppy has been more loyal, loving and show more affection to me this past year than my other two house apes living here, and they're human. Supposidily?

*waves wildly* Hi Grandmaof 2!! Great to hear from you. Yup, I have been away too long. You must remember, I am brand new at this job (well 6 months in actually) and in my first administrative role. I figured it wouldn't bode to well to tell the woman what I really wanted to tell her! I was so stunned at her ignorance that I was left speechless!

It was very rude and disrespectful of that person crazy. You did right to say nothing.

I would've said "Why? Because I have feelings just as my cat does? And you're entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine" then I'd have turned and walked away. It doesn't matter what she thinks, what does matter is what YOU think AND what you KNOW so go for it for I'm sure Christ is smiling.

I buy my dogs Christmas gifts every year. They are part of the family and are included in all our celebrations. Christmas is about giving and I feel good about giving to ALL those that I love. Why do we give gifts to infants? They clearly don't understand that it's for the birth of Christ. These days, most children don't know what Christmas is. All they know is that they get a lot of presents.

Your co-worker has no idea. There were many animals at the nativity scene. God loves all his creatures. The whole gift thing is about giving. You no doubt love your pets as I do and as many of us do. My goats got jam tartlets on Christmas day . They were very happy to receive them. My dogs got ham and turkey....my cat got some turkey and chicken cat food. My pets are a big part of my family. Like I said - your co-worker has no idea.

I would have probably told her - that all of creation was made to worship God. The animals at the nativity of Our Lord Adored Him. Also, in gifting to the animals we are thanking God for providing us with such devoted companions... When we gift eachother the gift is not directly to the one Who's birth it is either.

No you are not crazy I got my dogs a Christmas stocking with toys in it and they loved it and my daughter got little jackets for my dogs for Christmas. I do not know what I would have said to the friend. I may have said something like "To each their own."

I would have replied "If I wanted your opinion I would have asked for it!" Your co-worker must be a scrooge. I myself don't have any pets, but who doesn't buy a little something for their pets around the holidays. Everyone I know has. Your co-worker must have a thing against animals.

I always buy presents for my animals. They understand what time of year it is as soon as the stockings come out. They enjoy getting presents as much as the rest of us, and I have to say that I like seeing them play with their new toys. I think that I would have been shocked if I had a co-worker say the same thing to me. I do not think that I would have know how to respond to the question. I would have probably said that it is a personal choice and she has no obligation to do the same for her pets. I really see no harm in bringing joy to anyone else's life (whether they are a pet or not).

I don't think you're crazy for buying your ct a present this Christmas...so what? Animals can't understand us but your cat is a part of your family and if you want to give it a gift then it's okay! Reply to your co-worker: "Merry Christmas to you too! And *insert cat's name* (ex:Mister Snuffles) says hi." -joke!

I agree with your co-worker, but I wouldn't have used the word crazy. Christmas is supposed to be a celebration of Jesus' birth, but it doesn't feel that way. Giving gifts to your pet doesn't represent that in any way. It feels to me like Christian holidays are too secular. So many Christmas specials on TV focus on Santa or giving & getting gifts. Now, giving is good, but where is the message about our Lord & Savior being born on this day? (well not exactly that day, but you know what I mean). And don't even get me started on what Easter has turned into Anyway, my point is, it is quite pointless to get your pet a Christmas gift. They wouldn't know the difference if you got it for their birthday, Halloween, Arbor Day, or any other day. You should as may as well give them something at any time of the year.

How does she know what a cat understands, unless she is a cat herself. Just because she would not do it does not mean it is crazy. Think about it, Christ came to redeem all of creation, and cats are certainly part of creation. The cat may understand. She cannot say for sure.

I think I would have said something along the lines of ..." I dont think a baby understands that either but people still buy them gifts" or "did I ask for your opinion".
