i almost burned my whole hand

My sister has what seems to me as an old school baking oven. She asked me to turn it on. Instructions: turn the knob to 1 then light a match and light the long metal thing at the bottom. I got scared because I never did it before, so I asked my dad to do it instead. My dad lit the small metal thing that was protruding from the base of the oven then when the thing burst into flames, the hair on his hand got burnt - all of it! I was so scared because when I was thinking about what I was going to do if I was to do it myself - I would have put my whole hand into the base and lit the "long metal" - if I did that, I wouldn't be typing this right now.
