Does this happen in your house?

I think this is kinda funny and it's been going on as long as I can remember. In our house, I am usually the one to put the dishes away when the dishwasher is done. I guess that's just been my job. Now, there are times when the kids will put the dishes away, or my husband. For some unknown reason, it will take me WEEKS to find things after they've put them away. I've always told the kids that if they don't know where it goes, leave it on the counter and I'll put it away. But what gets me is that there are things that they use ALL THE TIME and they put it away in the wrong place. I can't understand how they know where it is to take it out of the cupboard and use it, but they don't realize that it goes back in the same place they got it from. I have found cookie sheets where the pots and pans are, silverware in the utilities drawer, glasses where the mugs are, the list is endless. It just ceases to amaze me that they know where to get it, but they have no clue where to put it back. Is this just my household or does this happen to everyone?

It is because they do not get things out on a regular basis,if they did they would put them where they should go.It is just bung it away and thats it ,job done and finished. My son does not know where anything goes although I show him so often. It is a little lazy.He knows where all is stuff is ,in that mess of a bedroom,They live in a little world of their own bless them.It is just easier to do it your self and they know that the little devils.PS I am glad I am not the only one!!!!!!

I know at my home I am the only one who puts the dishes away so I do not have that problem. When I did have the kids home and they did put the stuff away they just put them where they wanted to so they where out of site. They do not care where the dishes go. Could that be at your house.

That actually makes total sense. Not total sense to do it that way, but total sense that they DO do it that way! You're probably right, they figure it's "away" so they've done it right.

I would LOVE to see what my son's apartment looks like. Hopefully I'll get out to Japan in the next two years...

I think my kids grown adults live at your house. heehee. they are different now they have houses of their own. My daughter complains that her mother in-law just puts thing where ever and she then cannot find them the next time when she goes to use it the next time. She is getting her pay backs. Not from kids but from a mother in-law.

It doesn't happen in our house since we know where to put the dishes and we do it manually,Dishwahers are not common here in our country and it will do the work more precise.

Before we had a diswaser, we would let things dry in the dish drainer. We'd have the same problem when someone put them away... Sometimes people just don't pay attention.

oh this happens all the time in my house. I don't want to discourage the help but sometimes, it just messes me up and i try to bite my tongue. We are a bit disfunctional here so usually I do the obvious chores and am grateful when they just simply pick up after themselves. They get in moods where they want to "help". The toilet paper gets put on backwards and I have to search for everyday items while still tripping over their clutter. I bite my tongue so much.

I know, they are trying to help, and I try not to say anything about it when they help "wrong". But it can be so frustrating some times :)

My fiance and I put it the stuff on the counter if we don't know where it goes. I've always (well almost always) known where something goes at my family's house. When I've lived with old friends and a family, no I didn't know where it went. When I lived with just roommates, well we hadn't much dishes so again the same.

I have always told my kids to do that too - just put it on the counter if you don't know where it goes. But sometimes I guess the forget about that, and I have yet to teach it to my husband!

I do the same thing like your kids and husband do. I sometimes forget to put the things back to the origional place. My mom also complains my bad habit to me. I also find it difficult to find out the things I am looking for if they're not putted in the origional place.

It does make it hard to find them, and I'm hoping that they'll learn eventually!

Too funny as I thought that only happened in my house! I don't understand it either how the kids can get out all the stuff and yet when it is time to put it away they all seem to get amnesia! It never fails, have them put them away and when I go to get something it is like hmmm where did it go? I feel like I'm on a scavenger hunt on most days! Maybe it is amnesia or selective memory, where you only remember when you want to use something and after that all thoughts on where it came from is gone?! LOL

This happens all the time here.Like they haven't lived in this house for the last 6 years and it's not like I have alot of cupboards.Usually I'm the one who puts dishes away so that could be some of it but they do get them out so you think they would remeber, even the silverware is sometimes where the knives go or vice versa.

It happens here too, but it is usually my husband who puts the things in the wrong places. Probably 98% of the time I am the one who empties the dishwasher, but the time my husband does it, almost everything is in weird places. I will call him at work and ask~ If I were looking for the potato peeler, where would it be? He usually tells me the place I keep it and then I have to say, not there, where else, then he gives me the place he put it. So....this tells me he does know where it goes but for some reason he puts it in the wrong place. Can't complain, at least he is helping.

Yes, at least they're helping. Sometimes it is just easier for me to do it though :) That's funny that he gives you the right place it belongs then the place he actually put it :)

HaHaHa! That is so funny! My daughter's fiancee does the same thing. You know what I think? If they don't put it away in the right place, and they know it aggravates you (it does my daughter too), I keep thinking it's because they know eventually you'll just do it yourself. Then they won't have to. She tells me the same thing you just said, word for word, lol! The only solution I can figure out is stand there and watch, as you're saying "No, No, it doesn't go there, it goes here", and that might aggravate them enough to know better the next time, haha. It just makes me laugh. Cute discussion. Happy New Year to you!

It is funny and I just shake my head. Except for not being able to find something when I need it, I am a bit grateful for the help! And the good chuckle we all get :)

I am fortunate for I live alone so this does not happen to me. I would think your kids would know where the dishes go if they take them from a certain spot and they have been in that same spot for ages. I can see where this would amze you a bit lol
