Biggest Loser AT WORK Contest!

United States
January 7, 2009 7:06am CST
My friends from work and I (5 people total) are in a contest: Whomever loses 10 pounds first will win. All the others who didn't win each pay $5 to the winner. I know it isn't much money, but we're doing it almost solely for motivational purposes. Have you ever done this at your work or amongst friends? We're all weighing ourselves today and plan on doing so each Wednesday -- please wish me luck! :-P

my sister in law wanted to do this between the 6 of us (her hubby, my hubby, his brother and bro's wife) but wanted us to pay $100- EACH if we lost. while they have money, we do not, so we said no way...we just couldnt afford that! but $5 isnt bad, hope you do well! work it girl!!

Yeah $100 is too much for us to afford right now! That would be nice to win $500 though!! Puts much more at stake. I wish I had $100 to bet, but we're just doing the friendly little "motivational" bet of $5. LOL -- better than nothing! Have you all lost any weight, despite not entering the contest/competition?

Way to go! My goal is also about 20, but I have only lost 1-2 lbs so far. UGH -- I better get moving to win this thing! Best wishes.

Monetary motivation is good. I once tried this too. I did lose weight, but others lost more. So, after the first contest was over, I stopped. If I need to motivate myself, I will do it without money spurring me along. I wish you much success Bethany!

I've never done this before but it sounds like a good idea. It's a great way to motivate each other to do your best and reach your goals. Good luck!

wow I think that is excellent, a good way to get motivated and to do it with others as well for the comeraderie. I did try with friends but I found in all cases whenever one quit the diet when you were only two doing it, the other one followed shortly afterward.

Good luck, I hope you win. I think it is great motivation. Money always is a great prize. You should have made it a little more so people wouldn't want to give up that money. I believe it is easier to loose if you have a challenge with others.

I have had weight loss buddies before, but never did the contest part. Too much pressure, especially when I'm usually a very slow loser. I might as well just give them the money to begin with...lol. Good luck!

What a fantastic incentive, it doesn't matter about the amount of money, it's the fact that money is involved which will make you even more resolute NOT to pay out, ergo you will be doing everything possible to lose weight. Good luck to you. My mum did that with me, although she was desperately trying to lose weight and every week she would get weighed and if she put on she would have to give me £5! Well she has only given me £5 ONCE! She has lost over half a stone and she's 65 bless her! I have every faith that you will be the loser my friend. I know it's not a fortune but I think you could do with some luck right now. May 2009 be very happy for you and here's hoping you win the lottery too ;0)

Good luck. That is a great idea. I don't think the amount of money matters much. Whatever amount you are comfortable with and is enough to motivate you. Maybe once the first 10 pound competition is complete, more people will want to get involved- for those who have more than 10 pounds to lose. I have never done it, but it is something I would be willing to try once I get back to work.
